I just read how @RRP changed your mind from a MiniMax to a Medium. There aren't many non-OEM accessories made for the Medium, I would stick with the MiniMax, or use the money you were planning to use on accessories and just upgrade him to a Large, which you/he can get all kinds of fun toys for at a later date.

I do a bunch of cooking on a medium egg. They come up to temperature very quick and can handle cooking for 4 people quiet easily. also a little lump goes a long way. If you decide on the Medium I would get a woo ring and 13" stone for low and slow and a cast iron grid for searing. Many cooks I put the cast iron grid on the fire ring and then add the woo and stone on top of that. Cook all my veggies or potato's, etc. Pull out the woo, crank up the heat a sear. I would also get a smoke ware top because I am used to them. Good luck with your decision! Damn good Grampa for sure.I drink cheap beer so I can afford good bourbon.

Kick Ash Basket , a cast iron grate and 3 bricks, plate setter were all that I used with my medium. Then I passed it on to my nephew and got the large. You need some way of cooking raised direct and cooking indirect. The Ceramic Grill Store can help you out , just give them a call.Other things that I used were a flat bottom cast iron Dutch oven and a Looftlighter.

Turns out I'm wrong, don't know where I got that idea.Botch said:I just read how @RRP changed your mind from a MiniMax to a Medium. Well there are more accessories for a Large, the size that I now have, I just don't consider most of them necessary. So you were on the right path on maybe opting for a large but the medium won't disappoint unless grandson starts participating in Eggfests. There it pays to have your own accessories for a Large.

The Smokeware Top works beautifully. I got mine to allow low-n-slow cooks when it was pouring rain outside. Since purchasing mine, it hasn't rained since.

Is it necessary? No. It makes it easy for me. Do not have to worry about cast iron in the rain. Don’t have to worry about a sn cap. I will confess that I have one for every egg but the mini, only because they do not have an adapter for it and it will not fit over the thermometer. Smoke ware works for me!Mustache_Vol said:
