Thanksgiving Turkey Size for Large BGE

What's the biggest size turkey you can fit into a large BGE? Would love to do 15 lbs if possible. Also, if any of you have good turkey recipes, please post them!

Depending on the bird anatomy you can get an 18-19 lb one to fit spatched.
I have done a 22 lb one (not spatched) by pulling the fire ring and going off the fire box.  FWIW-

But can you find a 15 pounder this year?  I just brought home a bird that is 18 lb.  It was the smallest one in the bin.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.

  • I did a 25 lb in a large once.  Plate setter legs up, drip pan on the plate setter, turkey directly on the grate.  It was a tight fit, but it came out fine.
Did not have to move or remove the dome thermometer.  The drip pan did little except keep the plate setter clean - the drippings vaporized as they hit the hot pan.

  • I’ve cooked a 20lb no problem.

pretty much any bird found in a typical supermarket will pretty much fit. the problem might be from a big heritage bird with longer body and legs. i like the smaller than 18 better anyways

I also did a 22-23 pounder once. Had to remove my thermometer was an excellent cook. Easy
You can’t get to Loganville, Ga from anywhere. You have to start somewhere else
  • I've done 21.5.  Probably could sneak in another pound but it'll be tight.
