Jealous Devil - what do you think?

My regular local source for lump charcoal pulled the ol' switcharoo on me. They had been carrying Timber Charcoal. However when I went to buy more I discovered that they've switched to Jealous Devil. I used it last night for the first time, and I have to say, I'm not a fan. As the fire was starting, I noticed a fairly strong chemical-y smell. Does anybody else here have any feedback on the stuff? Was this a one-off, or is it all like this?

I haven’t tried it but thanks for the review. I have much the same opinion about Kamoda Joe Big Block lump for which I was swindled of $25 recently.

It is very dense, smells strong when first lighting, but cleans up fine.
It burns very very hot. Seems to burn for a long time too. I prefer Rockwood, but since I can no longer get it, I will use Jeleous Devil when the price is right and Royal Oak.
Their bag seems like a neat idea with the ziplock top, but my zipper ripped off the first time I tried to close it.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

You just have to plan on letting the smoke clear with Brazil coal. Takes extra time is allSouth of Columbus, Ohio.

Pro's
- burns hot
- burns long
- pretty consistent bag to bag for size of charcoal etc
- bag is waterproof
Cons
- bag is not recyclable
- clip often breaks for me as well when resealing
- if not on sale, $$$
neutral
- taste / flavour. Good when burning clean, not so great if rushed.
I gave it my best overall rating in a charcoal test i did in the summer, KJ i found best for the money but not as consistent bag to bag.

I absolutely love Jealous Devil. It's my favorite lump of all time. It comes in large pieces, burns hot and clean, and leaves behind minimal ash. I've noticed any unpleasant smell. It's a bit on the expensive side, but quality costs.Beautiful and lovely Villa Rica, Georgia
