Garden/Squash question

Ok fellas, I have a squash question.  We have what we think is summer/yellow squash. But when in cut some toinight to cook, the skin was super thick and the seeds were more pumpkin/acorn squash like.  Am I picking them too late or too early?  Do i have a different squash?  Here are the picks.  The dark yellow ones have the extremely hard skin.  Help!
