Hey all. We rented a house for the week in gunnersville the owner said it had an egg we could use so we planned a couple smoke cooks to use it. Well it has no plate setter. Does anyone near by have one we could borrow maybe?

Maybe a cast iron griddle with some bricks to elevate the grid? I think Gunnersville is likely to far for me to drive.

What you really need is a heat deflector at a size that fits on the top of the fire ring. (pizza tin or cookie sheet etc. as noted above.)
Absent that then just run raised direct (if that option is available-and three empty beer cans can fix that, elevating the grid as well) and low&slow.

‘To add to the great suggestions above depending on what and how long you will be smoking you could raise the grid with empty cans like @lousubcap suggested and you can also use less lump to stretch the distance between the food and fire. You can get around 6hrs at 250 with 1/2 bowl of lump in a large.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.

Seems unusual someone would purchase a Egg without a deflector of some sort. I'd snoop around, may be one stashed somewhere. Or shoot the landlord a message and ask. Good alternatives offered above if you can't locate one.

I've got a Large and a MM. I could head North as you head South in the morning. I think you have my number. Maybe you could drop it back off with my MIL in Madison at the end of the week. Text or i'll check this site when I get up.

Thanks for the offer i think we are gonna attempt the pan method. There is a large brick stick burner we are gonna try for the ribs later this week.gonepostal said:I've got a Large and a MM. Before I got all fancy with the plate setter, I used plain ceramic floor tile as a heat deflector.

Well here is what we found around the house. Here goes nothing.

as long as the hangars retain their structural integrity you should be home-free. Have fun wit the cook.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.
