Smobot help

I just hooked it up And started to cook chicken wings.  Set bottom vent to 1/2 open.  Set SMOBOT to 300.  Got to about 287 and stayed there for 30 or so min. Did not move.  So I opened the bottom vent full jumped to 310. Shut bottom to 1/2 again and the temp keeps rising to 230. I guess should have been happy at 287. Me or SMOBOT?   What can I do better?

few observations.  There is a icon for SMOBOT auto/Manuel. But the button does nothing except tell status.  Would like to control from app. While starting I could put in Manuel and open wide open and as I approach temp put in auto from kitchen.  Would be great.  Also would like a way to add notes during cooks like open lid to mop. Explain spikes and drops in temp.  Just a quick observation

Use the app set it and forget it.
Quick shake of kick ash, fingered the fire bowl holes, reload with RW and hickory, and lit the egg the other day threw smobot on set at 325 with the app, once it settled about 30 minutes tossed on the turkey and left the house.

That looks pretty damn good @alaskanassasin. Great color on that bird.

With temp controllers, don't mess with the settings too much. They're designed to take you/us out of the equation =)

I’m not sure exactly what the question is.  But I always set the bottom vent around 1/3 open.  And I usually use the SMOBOT only on low and slow.  One problem I have seen impact all temp controllers i have used is a poor seal or bad gasket that lets air flow through the base/lid.

Also, are you talking about the temp on the SMOBOT or the dome thermo.  If it is the dome thermo you may need to calibrate.

Edit - also, my smobot usually keeps temps pretty tight (+- 5 degrees F) unless there is a sudden rainstorm or something environmental.  But it usually gets temp back to normal in short order.

At that temp, bottom vent should be 3/4 open.  Let the bot do its thing.

My guess is the Smobot was 100% open trying to get temp up, but lower vent limited air flow.  When you opened the bottom vent you got a lot of air and temp jumped.  Top vent closed, but not enough to stop the rise and you got to 310, but you intervened again and shut the bottom vent.  Smobot was trying, but chasing your changes.

Best bet is open bottom vent and let Smobot do its thing.  A little overshoot is expected.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.
