Smoke coming out at the back of Egg close to hinges??
TrailheadEgg
Posts: 4
I have observed some smoke coming out of the back of my Egg close to the hinges. The last time I cooked a pork butt I had a hard time controlling the temp. If I tried to keep the temp around 225/230, the temp would drop and eventually the coals seemed to go “out”. I have had the Egg a little less than a year. Probably used it about ten times including ribs multiple times, pork butt a couple of times, a brisket, steak, wings and chicken. Is the smoke/heat coming out at the back and the trouble holding temp and the coals going out related? If so, what do I need to do?

Ok, obviously I am a newbie to the Egg and the forum. But, I was really hoping for a little bit of insight. Can I ask the question a different way? Do I need to provide more information? Am I an idiot?

look at the gasket in the back near the hinge. It is a common place the the gasket gets burned/damaged during hot cooks. My guess is that gasket replacement will be your solution

Thanks. A couple of follow ups so I can learn. When looking at the gasket, what am I looking for? Should I already be needing to replace the gasket (in less than a year)? Is there anything I can do in the future to avoid this? Is it common to have a little smoke coming out (at the gasket) at low temp cooks?I just looked and it is darker (black) in the back than it is in the front. Does this mean it is burnt/damaged?

Sounds like it. Best if you can post some pics.
I have been cooking with a burnt gasket for some time now, some even go w/o a gasket.
I don't have one but check out the Rutland gasket. A lot of people have it and it is supposed to last longer then the felt.XL aka Senior, Mini Max aka Junior, Weber Q's, Blackstone 22, Lion built in, RecTec Mini 300, Lodge Hibachi, Uuni, wife says I have too many grills,,,,how many shoes do you have?

One way this occurs is the bands relax on a high temp cook. The lid is now out of alignment. You use the lid, and doing so rolls the felt in the back of the egg gasket, as it's already hot. Which then exposes it to more heat and accelerates the deterioration process.
Just a hunch.
