Which additions/EGGcessories for Big Green Egg Small

Hi all!

Short introduction: My name is Jan, 26 years of age and living in Antwerp, Belgium. Ever since I was young, I loved cooking and I still very much do. My interests are various, as I bake bread and even make my own cheese! I’ve always loved grilling and smoking too, so a couple of years ago my dad gifted me a Weber Smokey Mountain. Since then, I’ve prepared numerous pork butts! Now, living on my own for almost two years, I think the time has finally come to fulfill my biggest wish: A Big Green Egg! After lurking some time on this forum and Google, I've decided to go with the Small for a couple of reasons: I live in an apartment and my balcony only measures 59.5 square feet + most of the time, I only cook/grill/smoke for my girlfriend and myself. 

I've done some research on which EGGcessories/additions are necessary to have the best cooks and this is currently on my list:
  • ConvEGGtor
  • Kick Ash Basket
  • Baking Stone 
  • Welder Gloves
Do you guys have any other suggestions that might be useful for me? Unfortunately, I live in Belgium (Europe) and therefore not able to buy an Adjustable Rig or Woo.

    I have a Small and use it a lot.  You can do a pork butt on the small, but you may have to raise the thermometer so that it doesn't touch the meat.

    I would add to your list an insta-read thermometer. and a way to raise your grid to the gasket level for direct grilling...

    I'd suggest some type of cleaning tool for cleaning out the ash. My small didn't come with any type of rake. So I'd suggest some type of tool for cleaning the ash out.

    I also recommend an instant read thermometer. Thermoworks has some good options for instant read thermometers. Made in England. The Javelin Pro Duo is also a good option for the money. Made in China. The quality seems to be good but I'm not sure how long one might last. I've had mine for over a year with zero issues. 

    Enjoy the small BGE! It's my favorite egg to use.

    @JanRaey - welcome to the forum. I have two small BGE’s and absolutely love them.

    I agree completely with the comments above about a good instant read thermometer.  It is a must. And while not a necessity, the KAB is a fantastic addition particularly on the small. It greatly improves airflow.

    After that, two things are very important IMO 

    1.  The ability to cook indirect.
    2.  The ability to raise your grid to felt level or higher.  

    There are many ways to get these things done.  Back in the old days,  I used four fire bricks to achieve both.

    The conveggtor will get #1 done. However, a woo with stone and drip pan from Ceramic Grill store is a much better option (realizing shipping may be an issue for you). Also, a few fire bricks laying flat on the grid with a raised grid above will get this done also.

    Raising the grid is a must for a lot of folks including me.  You can use carriage bolts and a second grid to get this done.  See the link below for instructions ( instructions are for a large BGE, so you will need to adjust accordingly).

    Again, you can also use a couple firebricks resting on your fire ring to get the grid up high.  The woo from CGS also gets the grid to felt level in a much more elegant manner. 

    One other way to get a higher grid along with a second level is to get the grate stacker from Smokeware.  Again you may run into pricey shipping, but I don’t know.  I actually have the woo and the MiniMax Grate Stacker that I use to get two levels of indirect on the small BGE,

    I hope some of this helps and enjoy your new egg.  

    Edit - you could just cash in some of those Antwerp diamonds and ship over CGS’s entire product line 😂😂😂😂

    Unfortunately, it is not possible to get a Woo ring shipped to Belgium. I think it would cost me too much in total. I did find something that might be a good replacement I think. What if I bought two half moon Small raised grids (incl. dripping pan) and a 10" ceramic stone?

    Welcome, and you have a wealth of experience to bring to our group at such a young age. Your insights will be very valuable.

    If you have already purchased the small, then this will not matter. I strongly recommend the medium or even the large, even in spite of the space constraints. The size difference between the three in a nest is a few inches, but the cooking experience difference is dramatic. whatever you choose for your first egg, you will love it. I am buying a small egg myself tomorrow after selling one I had for six years to buy a mini max instead. It’s a great egg.

    You need some way to raise the grate. I like the woo from ceramic grill store.  I love my small. It's a searing machine!!

    an inexpensive round bottom wok, wok ring, and wok shovel come in handy. get one with a long handle, easier to use and the egg is dome open when cooking anyways. definitely a thermapen

    No additional advice to provide, but agree with all that was said above. 
    I will state that I am very hopeful that you will post your cooks often wether successful or if you run into challenges. We can help you through your challenges since we have many helpful people and literally decades of combined experience on this forum. Do not hesitate to ask. However, selfishly I am interested in how Belgians grill and see what is “standard or normal” compared to how we do things in the USA. I think I would enjoy trying some of “your” recipes.
