Rockwood Thank You

@stlcharcoal not sure if you always have free shipping. But regardless thank you. Normally head down to the local ace but at the moment that isn’t an option. Luckily the 3 bag package with free shipping was perfect. Added in some smoking wood as well as that runs low. Just wanted to reach out and say thanks and hope your business is holding up through all the turmoil.

Welcome!

You had me excited there for a minute, until I saw $39.95/bag. That doesn’t seem like free shipping.

I have found that there is very little in life that is truly free, that applies to shipping as well. The correct way to word it is the shipping is built into the price.

Shipping is never "Free", it's just worked into the price.  We used to have it separate and priced accordingly from your zone (distance from St Louis), but Amazon pretty much ruined that.  It's kind of difficult to explain, but in order to keep the metric up on their website we had to artificially "raise" our price on other sales channels......only way to do that without truly raising the price was to work the shipping in and call it "free" to appease the Amazon bots.

The price used to be a lot better until UPS and Fedex joined forces to lowered the max weight from 70# to 50#.....now the additional handling fee kicks in on anything above 50# (which is why the 3-bag box used to be such a better deal than the 2-bag.)  That BS killed the 3-bag box for 2 months until they saw how much revenue we both lost and cut us a discount on that stupid fee.

Either way, glad you're happy!!  :)

I just looked at the Rockwood web-site and see where the 3 bag pack has increased by $5 since mid-March.  Still, you can't beat door-to-door service and with UPS!  And social distancing as well, so there's that!
Glad you guys are making it so far.  Definitely uncharted territory here.

Ace offers curbside delivery. Not sure how that works, but I would imagine you could drive up, pop the trunk and they would put the bag(s) in, close the trunk and you're gone. Not UPS's door-to-door, but not 40 bucks either!

Ace's in STL are making home delivery now too.  Used to be $50 minimum, but that's all waved right now.

Yeah, sorry......the discount from UPS we were supposed to get didn't actually line up to what they said it was going to be.  It's up to $120 on Amazon now to cover for their commission.

Opinion here but if you need Amazon Prime to manage your charcoal inventory then you have bigger issues. Set a restock point at 3 bags.
You guys are quick with the UPS service.  Much appreciated.

Didn’t mean to start such debate. I was just happy I found some charcoal. The ace that carries the Rockwood in my area is inside a grocery store and as such I think falls into that grocery stores curbside pickup which is basically impossible to get a time for.

I realized I only have one bag left and was happy to realize I could order online and get it all delivered for what isn’t a horrible price.

Charcoal, fat side up/down, and is @nolaegghead a goodly guy or a badly guy will always start debates.

Not following what you are saying here.  Has nothing to do with inventory.

I am saying that for a customer to pay even more for the amazon prime shipping must imply urgency on delivery for his/her inventory.  Maintaining a solid low level alarm supply means you can easily use your UPS pricing and save a few $$.  At least the above is what I intended.  My inventory use was at the personal level.

I miss the days of having a basement.  I used to keep 20+ bags on hand at all time.  Now living back in the desert where storage is a premium, I let Ace store the bulk of my bags and only keep 4 at home.

Ok gotcha.....you're talking about the customer, not us.

Yeah it all ships from the same warehouse......our warehouse.  We are "seller fulfilled prime."  Amazon is nothing more than a sales channel.  So it doesn't matter which website you order from, Amazon (regular or prime), Ebay, Walmart.com, or Rockwood.store, it all ships from Eureka, MO if we are the vendor.

Not being able to cross the border, Rockwood is a no go for me this summer... I have been able to get my hands on a few bags of Maple Leaf which is pretty good too.  I did not want to keep a stock anymore but with the pandemic, I am back to having a couple of bags in the basement. 🤷‍♂️

I have only gotten my hands on one bag of Basque Maple Leaf Lump and it was "all that."  Once this gets clear (??) I will try again to grab some but I would bet getting that getting that south of the border is more difficult than Rockwood on your side of the aisle.   B)

Yep.  Then you have to bid on your own name otherwise your competitors will big on it and put their stuff above yours when people search for your product.  Then they only give you half your money two weeks after the item is delivered, and the other half two weeks after that.  Oh, and on seller fulfilled prime, you have to buy shipping through them.

Thanks all for the reminder... I bought two bags locally a few weeks back to "buffer" my charcoal need.  Well my local place is now shut down and I justed dusted bag one (after lending some to neighbor).

So now need to consider a two bag or three bag order.

I bought a 20# bag of KJ at Lowes for $19.95 and I like it.  It's very dense and burns hot and pieces are a nice size.

Basque and Maple Leaf are two distinct brands.  Basque is sold at Costco here and when they run a special, it is crazy cheap (less than 10$ US).  I initially enjoyed it because of the lovely smell (it has pieces of bark and not fully carbonized pieces of wood so it is like adding wood chunks), but it eventually resulted in creosote build up in the dome (which caught fire from time to time). I have now switched to Maple Leaf which is for the most part fully carbonized wood and an occasional piece of bark.  Rockwood is my top choice when I can get it.

I only have one item listed there and no one could find it anyway. My 2 or 3 sales were enough to sour me on selling on Amazon, especially the part where they hold your money for about a month.

I'd love to go that route, but the Egg isn't real big in my area.  Lots of pellet smokers and COS, a few have BGEs, but no local "community" of eggers.

I could go along with some Chesterfield County folks if they wanted to order a pallet of Rockwood.  The two Chesterfield Co. BGE dealers I shop at don't have Rockwood.  I have never found any in my area of operations, and have no desire to wander outside it.

Thanks to Jonathan, I can stay supplied, so all is good on Abbeville Plantation.
