Cabbage heart/core

Every since I was young (60-65 years ago), when a head of cabbage was used, I have enjoyed eating the raw heart.  Even to this day I enjoy dipping it in some ranch veggie dip.  Just wondering if any of you have uses for cabbage hearts.

Had to think about it but what doesn’t get chopped in slaw gets tossed.

I can remember my mom grating the cabbage for slaw. When she was through we would salt the hell out of the heart and eat it raw standing at the sink.

I always thought the core was supposedly inedible so I've never even tried it! Plus, for my  needs (I only use cabbage for slaw), there's always more than enough without the core.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

of course you eat it, its food.  it would be like tossing out the carrot greens instead of adding them to the soup

Never thought about eating the core of the cabbage. I am going to have to give it a try.

Thanks for the replies.  Showed my wife that it wasn't weird for someone to enjoy them.  Anyone ever experimented with smoking, grilling, etc?  My wife really enjoys boiled cabbage, me occasionally is fine.  Might have to O.D. her on boiled cabbage this year to have some hearts to experiment with.

Came up through a family that also ate the hearts, which I continue doing.
That said, you may not be on solid footing using comments on here to prove a lack of "weirdness".   :)

Well, it is moderately poisonous, but if you add some salt it will neutralize the poison.

FYI - You are asking lunatics at the asylum what is weird and what isn't! 😄. Please see Rocky mountain oyster threads, and I don't even want to mention Scotties anus.

I throw cabbage hearts at the neighborhood kids when they get on my lawn.
