PS woo with spider and stone?

Anyone use this setup before?  I have a PSwoo and unfortunately my platesetter is about to be in two pieces. When I breaks , I am ready to move on from the platesetter to something uniform in shape yet  trying to avoid having to ditch the PSwoo. Ceramic grill store recommended a spider and 16 (maybe 17?) inch stone to use with the PSwoo. Curious as to your thoughts and experiences with this setup. Thanks In advance.

There is NO downside to adding a Spider and pizza stone to your PSwoo.
    Just more versatility.

  • The spider and stone are awesome. A wok fits the spider perfectly and it's great for searing steaks if you add a small grate

  • I like the woo a lot.  I dont have the PSWoo, but the "regular" one, and a stone resting on the lower section works really well.  I have a spider that I have used on my adjustable rig, but never tried it below the woo.  I suppose it would work just fine.

I am looking at the same issue with the PSwoo and PS.  I traded emails with tom at CGS and here's a video he sent along that will help.  My only concern is the reduced clearance between the stone and cooking grid as I use a good sized old paella pan as the grease catcher.

Thanks . I have same concern . Also wonder about airflow with different size stones . They recommended a 16 or 17. Can’t remember which .

The Spider can be flipped so it sits down/within the fire ring so you will be looking at a 13" stone. You will not loose any distance between stone and cooking grid because Spider drops down if you are concerned about space.

Only issue with a 13" stone is a great loss in the available heat deflector area.  CGS used to manufacture a SS triangle brace that was meant to handle any of their stones with the PSWoo.  Moved on to the spider.

I agree with you. But for low and slow coking, once your Egg is up to temp, there is very little airflow as the ceramics hold the heat so well. Even the 13" stone sunk into the fire ring causes the rising heat to roll and not rise straight up from the central hot spot. Would not be my choice for turbo cooking ribs.lol

My understanding is you can also put the spider the other  way sitting in the platesetter slots on the fire ring . Bigger stone can be used with this method

Yes, jut like the video that @lousubcap posted above.
This is what makes the Woo and Spider so versatile. You can set it up for your exact needs.

Neither right now as my PSwoo does not have the notch at the three points-it is a full circle with cricular setbacks to support the PS.  Like I mentioned, to get a large stone I would need to go "legs up" as I understand it and I refuse to lose that much vertical clearance.  I have a 15" diameter pizza stone that fits quite well in the three points of the PSwoo so will go that route when it becomes necessary. I looked at the PS woo braces and oval stone a few years ago and din't make the move.  Window of opportunity slammed shut.  Long answer.

Sometimes I just lay a couple stainless rods across the firebox and place pizza stone on top. Woo on top of that.
