Old Egg-no way to keep lid open

I bought an old small egg which only has a single hinge in back connecting the lid to the bottom. The hinge looks a little flimsy and there is no way for the lid to stay open.  Can I put a new band assembly on my old egg?  Where would I go to buy one?  Thanks in advance!

Do you have a picture? Are you sure it's a small and not a mini? You might be able to adust the band with tightening the bolts on the band. My Large needs adjustment to stay open every once awhile.

    Can you post a pic??

An old OLD OLD egg had a piano hinge in the back and arms on the side that were over center type--you used the ash tool to "lock" them place.  Then on the old OLD egg came a single hinge with a lock bar on it (not spring assisted.)  On the old egg was the spring-assisted the hinge that's been used for for 10+ yrs up until about two years ago.  Now it's two hinges near the back with the replaceable springs.

i had one of the original mexican spring bands on one egg, when the springs went out i could wedge a wood split between the back of the dome and base to keep it open, that was around dec 01 and jan 02 =)  if i had one of those older eggs and was looking for an upgrade i would call bge direct and try to get a hold of an older employee like bruce buchannon just to confirm compatibility, there were some changes back in the 90's with eggs, castings etc.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I'm pretty sure that's not a Big Green Egg.......

Maybe it's just bad lighting or the glare......it's not dark enough and even for the old clay type, that grain is wrong.

Does it have "Big Green Egg" cast into it just below the temp gauge?

Yes. It has Big Green Egg cast in Each Word on top of the other. It does seem to be lighter than other Eggs I've seen, though.  It has a BGE thermometer and a sliding cap with Big Green Egg cast into it.  The cap does not have a daisy wheel, though-just the sliding disc.

that long vertical seam running down the side of the egg puts it around early 80's i believe, from what i remember late 80's didnt have the seam

Wow.....that's a super old one then......like 70s, or early 80s.  I saw one down at Eggtoberfest like that before, but it wasn't that faded.

    What's the diameter?

    Upgrade

Thanks.  I'm trying to upgrade this one if possible instead of just shelling out more money for a new one.  Some odd part of me loves
taking old things and making them work like new again-I guess that's why I have so much old cast iron and vintage woodworking tools!

I’m with you! Plus most times the original old cast iron and in particular vintage woodworking tools were made much better than those sold today.

It should have a prop rod on one side or both depending on the size of the kamado. You pull the prop rod at the center towards you and will go past center keeping the lid open.
