Anyone coat their butt with mustard prior to putting on the rub?

Tons of people do just that. Thousands.

Waste of a perfectly good hot dog condiment.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I have done butts and ribs like with a mustard rub several times. Then one day I tried it without this step and couldn't tell any difference, so now I skip it and save the extra mess.
Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
I decided to do the Adam Perry Lang thing...6T mustard, 6T water, 1.5T Worcestershire, 1.5T apple cider vinegar

I have done both, there is no difference. The mustard is just a binding agent for whatever rub you are applying.

Agree100%. Save it for the hotdogs.Carolina Q said:Waste of a perfectly good hot dog condiment.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga -
I’ve tried it - and I love mustard. But it doesn’t add anything in my opinion. Just put your rub on and roll forwardMemphis, TN

Fwiw, the mustard binder is useful when cooking on non-ceramic cookers. The high moisture / low airflow environment of the egg makes the binder kinda counter productive. On other apparatus I find it more useful. Other cookers dry your food out significantly compared to the egg.

I only use mustard for ribs, per the Car Wash Mike recipe.

Life is not based on need alone. It's only there as a binder as noted above. There is no lingering taste impact. Your call.
