pulled pork question

I have only ever made pulled pork using butts. Has anyone used the picnic? If I'm not mistaken I believe the picnic is leaner. Please post opinions on using the picnic.

I use butts also, but I believe you are right on picnic being leaner.  Picnics have a larger bone and more chunks of fat to trim, so that kind of offsets the cheaper price anyway.

Someone from the East Coast can chime in, but I have heard of the picnics being used quite often for pulled pork that way.

As far as preference, they both work for pulled pork, and I have heard arguments for both.  I think it is more of just what you are used to cooking will dictate which you prefer.

theres a little more grizzle/ fat layer that needs to be removed when pulling. has slightly more pork flavor. other than that it works well, same cook

A picnic will make a fine pulled pork.  It does a take a little bit more effort to get it ready to cook.  (I prefer to remove the skin as it doesn't really crisp up on the egg due to the high moisture levels in the egg.)  Also because the picnic includes more leg muscle than the upper part of the shoulder it takes a bit more time for it to become tender.

In a hurry I grabbed a picnic by accident one time - I greatly prefer butts.  Greetings from fellow Marylander - I zip by Sparrow‘s Point twice a day (I looked at one of your old posts) - live in Bel Air, work in Glen Burnie.

  • Thanks for all your responses. Since I'm making it for 13 guys for our annual Canada trip I'll stick with what I know.

I work in Glen Burnie also. Small world.
  • Heard some people like to combine butts & picnics to make pulled pork
