Jalapeno Pepper Tracker- borrowing from @DoubleEgger- not nearly as important-but WTF?
Late Friday Diversion:
For that past two years plus the local Kroger was selling jalas for $0.99/lb. Around eight weeks ago an oil embargo (kidding here) price spiked to $1.79/lb with no intermediate pause. Once cooler heads prevailed the price is back to $1.39/lb (and has been for a few weeks). I thought jalas were immune from politics??
Tossing this out there since the KY Derby is May 4th and the following day is...
BTW-try to find jalas around here the week before Cinco De Mayo/Derby weekend is a challenging and expensive deal.

Nichole grows 3 plants every year which puts us awash in spicy peppers.

I have 4 jalapeños planted and about 5 jars of last years pickled.
-
How many do you buy that the price matters even a little?

I thought KY was a jelly, not an oil. But I love lubricants as much as the next guy or gal. Let's hope we get some price stabilization so we aren't cooking with garnet.

If you confuse your KY with your jalas, you’ll only make that mistake once. ... trust me...

I used to have 2-3 plants but their yield was always late in the season. Regarding quantity, I generally buy in 2-3 lb lots when cranking out 40-60 ABT's at a shot, This happens in the Spring and early summer, then football season. Rest of the year I usually make around 15-20 at one time. And it's not the price point as much as the friggin percentage increase in one go. FWIW-
And it was Friday...
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
Find a local Mexican market. It can be worth the trip for flap meat, fresh chicharrones, fresh tortillas and ingredients you didn’t know you needed.

Or Asian supermarkets. Veg and other things are way cheaper than at the usual grocery stores.
And you can get a smoked pig’s head for <$5...

$1.29/ib at my neighborhood Kroger today. First time I've ever even paid attention to the price. I only ever buy 8 or 10 at a time so never paid any attention to price before. Now it's going to bug me and I'm going to have to graph the prices over the summer because of this damn thread. 🙂
Checking online I see that my neighborhood Harris Teeter (which is owned by Kroger) sells them at $2.29/lb. That seems a bit out of whack. HT is always a little bit higher and don't shop there much but for some reason they are the only grocer in the hood that carries fresh mung bean sprouts so shop there at least a few times/month.
Our brand new Wegman's opens in one week and I don't really care what they charge per pound of jalapeno cuz they'll be getting all my grocery money anyway.

I just got most of my peppers into pots today. Not all of them are jalapeños but a few are.
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.
