Stainless cap?
Guys see some pics of eggs on here, and saw some on sale at the smokeware site. What's the advantages to these?

Doing a 12+hour smoke on a rainy day with no water on your brisket is an advantage of these. Definitely recommend getting their thick stainless steel “stopper” plate to go inside to replace the porcelain egg cap too.

Buy one and don’t look back. Worth every penny.

The other advantage is the open setting stays static when lifting the dome unlike the old daisy wheel. I think BGE has solved this issue with there new cap.

Your opinion raises an interesting challenge. Does anybody here have both a Smoke Ware top and one of the new style BGE lids? If so how about posting a valid test!

Design of the SS cap trumps without compare Ron. Still a fair question.

The smokeware caps and flat cap(stopper) were the first purchases that I made after getting both of my eggs. You’ll be pleased with them.

Didn't know about the flat cap. I leave my SmokeWare cap on and just close it and the bottom vent to put out fire when I finish a cook.
-
Sorry if this came across as opinion. I meant it as conjecture. I thought I saw a video a while back that advertised that the new cap stayed in place. Regardless, I have the smokeware caps on all my eggs and really like them. The only time that they come off is when I run the smobot.

I have both the smokeware cap and the new BGE cap. I don’t use the smokeware any more because it gets gunked up and hard to open at times. The new cap is simple and stays in place. I could probably clean the smokeware but I’m lazy.

I have both and prefer the new egg cap. It stays in place when opening the lid and seals tightly when I close it. Since buying it I haven't had to use the original cap to shut the egg down at all. I also picked up the umbrella attachment which so far has worked good in the rain.
Deffinately worth the purchase if you don't have a smokeware SS cap but can't say it would be worth buying if you already have one. Absolutely worth replacing a stock daisy wheel though.

My XL came with the new style "flat" cap. I removed it and put on a Smokeware. It never leaves my eggs; not even for cleaning :)

Was a die hard daisy wheel guy until my ceramic cap broke (again) and my bro-in-law gave me a Smokeware cap for Christmas. I finally installed it a few cooks ago.
Pros: See above comments.
Cons: Get's hot, really hot and it gets messy/greasy, even after a cook or two
Overall, I like it but it's a matter of keeping up with the grease and making sure stainless steel wipes are on-hand,

I agree, I haven't used the stainless steel wipes, I just use the heavy duty easy off oven cleaner. Usually 2 or 3 times a year.

So this doesn’t damage the stainless smokeware cap? Just curious as I also do this with the daisy wheel. I’m wanting to buy a SW cap but don’t want to have to clean it .

@lentsboy007...I haven't damaged mine doing this...although I do take extra care that the top doesn't come off when I remove my cover. As for cleaning, every now and then with Easy-Off...and it does all the heavy work. Don't ask me how I know, but Easy-Off will dissolve aluminum foil.

This reminds me I need to clean my Smokeware cap. I it especially if it is raining. The new one is still going to let rain in to me and that was the main reason I got the Smokeware cap. When I use it seems to get up to temp better and holds temps better then the old daisy wheel.

Another advantage to the Smokeware cap, is leaving it open to allow airflow... I have not had mold inside the egg since I started leaving it open along with the bottom.

I must have gotten an especially good one because I've never understood the complaints about the cast iron DFMT that came with my Egg. Keeping it with the screw to the front (handle side) of the egg, it has almost never lost whatever adjustment I had for airflow. OK, at first the screw was a bit loose and I could see how that might happen, but by tightening the screw and letting the smoke coat the top it would always stay in position.
However, I used the ceramic top whenever I finished a cook because it brought the temp down faster than just closing the iron top and that saved charcoal.
The problem is that I'm kind of a klutz and I recently broke my second ceramic top. It was too badly shattered to fix so I bought a Smokeware top so I would never have to worry about that problem again.
I like it, but quickly saw that it took a long time for the temp to go down, meaning I was wasting charcoal. So I bought the flat Smokeware lid and that seems to work. My only complaint is that I have to get the gloves out to remove the Smokeware lid so I can put the flat top on. Didn't have to do that with the iron top so I wish Smokeware would put a that same kind of handle on theirs.

I don't understand the urge to clean EVERYTHING. Have a coffee mug at work, that I bought 4 years ago. It had never been washed. Until I left for BB19, and someone in my office washed it. Coffee does not taste the same now. I'm devastated.
I've never worried about cleaning my smokeware cap, and somehow I've been able to cook tasty grub. And live to tell others about it.

I've had smoke ware caps for a few years and have never cleaned them. they work fine.
-
They snuff the fire better when they’re gunked up.

I have both. The new reggulator is much better in my opinion. I like how solid it is, how it sticks without any problem, and can be left on. The rain deflector is a minor purchase as an add on, but I haven’t used it. I put the smokeware cap on my kamado joe jr since it doesn’t have a rain stopper that comes with it.
