BGE (the company) still going strong, according to Google Trends

I was curious to see what the competition is doing to BGE, so I turned to Google Trends for some answers. Google Trends shows the relative frequency of Google searches over a specified period of time. So it sets the period of maximum searches as the 100 point, and all others relative to that point. Looking at the past decade, it is interesting to see how BGE surpassed Weber (in terms of Google searches). It is also interesting to see that Traeger and Kamado Joe are coming on more slowly than I would have thought (at least in the USA).
The story is only a little different in Canada (over the last 5 years), where KJ has a bit more steam. This is not surprising, as BGE Canada is not that aggressive, and the retailers for BGE in Canada are less...how should I put it...customer centred.

I have to call BS on that data. It shows that in 2009 at the peak it wasn’t muchlower than current? Nobody outside of the BBQ community’s knew what a kamado was in 2009.

i kind of agree, in 2002 i saw an egg first and bought it because it looked like a better cooker than my weber, googled and found a forum of 15 or 20 regulars, mostly bbq people. i still havent seen another egg other than the ones i bought and or gave away.

I think you're both misinterpreting the data.
What the OP's post shows is the frequency of searches relative to one another; not the total number of searches. Certainly the total number of all the above searches has climbed astronomically since 2009. His data above shows how each compares to one another proportionately.
Large Egg circa '06 model.

The data are showing relative frequency - so the values are all relative to each other. It is a comparison of the number of searches for big green egg relative to the number of searches for the other terms (such as Weber Grills).

Ok that makes more sense

Skewing the data is that most all Kamado recipes are “big green egg” so when you get a new Kamado joe you Learm quick to search big green egg prime rib instead of Kamado joe prime rib. Those are driving up the number of big green egg searches even if it’s not sales related.
XL, Small, Mini & Mini Max Green Egg, Shirley Fab Trailer, 6 gal and 2.5 gal Cajun Fryers, BlueStar 60" Range, 48" Lonestar Grillz Santa Maria, Alto Shaam 1200s, Gozney Dome, Gateway 55g Drum -
With enough data you can derive any result you need...

That's a good point. According to Google's business model, though, more searches = more $$, doesn't it?

And don't forget that correlation does not equal causation. Those two quotes should cover you for anything sciency.

For Google perhaps.

I'm good with sciency but those are some big words right there 😎
