Anyone tried Stump Chunks?
I've lit my egg just about every way possible - Looftlighter, starter cubes, charcoal chimney, etc - but I've never been totally satisfied with any method. I recently saw a video for Stump Chunks that said they're great for even lighting because you can spread them all over the top of the coal bed. Sounds like it's worth a try. My only concern is that they might impart smoke flavor or leave a sticky residue that will cling to the egg. Anyone have any experience with them?

I use them and love them, found them at my local Ace Hardware. They work as advertised, burn up with no residue or flavor.

I use them to start my fire pit. They work well, but never tried them in the egg.

That's good to hear. The guy that sold me my egg years ago did a great job at freaking me out about lighter fluid staying in the ceramic and haunting your cooks forever. I've been wary of alternative lighting devices ever since.

They are great! Super cool guys that own the company too.

Have you tried the Propane Torch? (An attempt at an assist to Mickey's photo above.)
I know you've said you've tried just about everything. This torch combined with a 20 lb. propane tank is hard to beat.

Even better, buy one of those adapters to fill the little camping bottles, then just screw in a camping bottle. Completely portable.
Even, even better......have two of them and be a total badass.

Awesome, so no residue in your experience and no smoke flavor in the food? By the way, I just ordered some more Rockwood. Picking it up at my local Ace in a day or two (I'll grab the Stump Chunks then, too).

No, I haven't tried that, but I imagine I'd run into a similar issue to the one I had with my Looftlighter: I don't like standing over the coals, breathing in all the smoke, as they catch. I much prefer the flick a lighter and walk away setup you get with starter cubes. Trouble with them, is they suck at lighting evenly. My other concern with that propane torch would be having it in the yard. I've got young kids who are always out there, and I don't see myself disconnecting and storing it every time I want to use it.

Fair enough, @bicktrav .

I'm not too proud to admit that for the past year I have used one square of a Rutland starter and a couple good squirts around the lump with cheap 91% rubbing alcohol. I light and walkaway leaving my dome open.

I like the MAPP torches for portability and ease of use. Easy to pack for eggfests and such too.
You don't need the more expensive yellow bottles. The blue ones will do just fine. Takes a minute or so to light up the egg.

Start instant sparks with torch, finish with antique 1200W high speed mini dryer.
