Instant pot....

Well I just got a phone call from my idiot brother. He was trying to tell me that his instant pot is better than my BGE. Claims he just had the best ribs of his life. He said he just cooked ribs with some liquid smoke and some cola in it then transferred to his cheap propane grill to add bbq sauce and had ribs in under 45 minutes. Best ribs he’s ever had he said lol. Also says he can make the worlds best chicken wings in under thirty minutes. He throws them in frozen and in thirty minutes they are done and best wings ever. I told him he should enter some bbq competitions...

Instapot has its place.  I could do an instapot + egg ribs in about 80 minutes that would kick your asa!  But all instapot better than all egg???@elevnn HAHA what a maroon.

I will add, I am not familiar with an instant pot at all. From the conversation, it sounded like a glorified pressure cooker. I had to look it up to see what it was. I took what he had to say about ribs with the idea in my head that he’s an idiot. I’ve watched him boil ribs before with liquid smoke and finish them off on the propane grill. So that will always leave a lasting impression.

Have one and neither I or Nichole could ever get into it. Some do. I prefer cooking or smoking over fire. Or on our Blackstone.  Braise in the DO. FWIW.

It connects to the intranetz, so it MUST be true!

I agree that the IP has a place in my arsenal - but it cannot compete with my wood oven or my eggs. They are different beasts. I made some white bean and pastrami soup in the IP on Monday. Came home after work, prepped the meal (dried beans) then went for a bike ride. I got in a 25 mile ride after work AND cooked supper.
The IP makes some things easy. It can never roast, smoke or cook like the eggs.

Sounds similar to Applebee’s ribs.  Boil them for an hour, brush on sauce, and put under broiler for 7 minutes.

I think only KCBS judges say ribs have to be smoked to be effing delicious.

I usually use the pressure washer to blast all the flesh off the rib bones, liquify in the Blendtec, extrude into soylant green 2000 nutrient casings and microwave.

And on Sundays I elude the eyes
    And hop the Turbine Freight
    To far outside the Wire
    Where my white-haired uncle waits
    Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
    Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
    Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
    For fifty odd years

    And I eat my ribs.

I have and instapot and you are correct it is an electric pressure cooker. If you have ever had ribs cooked in a crock pot they are like that but cook faster.  Honestly I did not care for them when I tried them.  I don’t see myself doing ribs again. Texture was off and they lacked flavor. I suppose I might try a combo and finish on the egg...but I would rather just do them all on the egg and if I need to speed them up use foil and turbo.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I have a BGE, an Instant Pot, and two sous vide appliances. They are all used for different things. If I am smoking meat, it is done  entirely on the BGE. This Instant Pot is great for things like risotto, beans, stews, etc. The sous vide works well for chicken for salads, fish, veggies, etc. I will be damned if I ever cook a prime steak sous vide. Don't care what anyone else says.

And sometimes I just use pots and pans on the stove.

If you are craving ribs and don’t have 3-4 hours you can pick them up on your way home from work, 20 min in the instant pot and finish with smoke and sauce on the egg. These are very good.

I suppose I might give these another try sometime because I do like that aspect. I think I overcooked them in the instant pot, then finished in the oven and they just tasted very bland and too mushy.

Part of the allure of great wood smoke emitting from a green ceramic vessel is the fact your neighborhood gets to enjoy it.  They are cooking their food in their kitchens (pressure cookers, microwave, ovens), but no one cares. It’s the great smelling stuff on your BGE that gets the comments.  I even get s text from a guy 2 blocks north of me asking what’s cooking....he can tell when my egg is lit.
  • I guess instant pot has changed over the years.  I used to carry a 5 gal bucket and newspaper around in my truck on long trips, that was my instant pot.  You know when you have to go and some of those bathrooms in the flyover part of the country aren't worth holding out for but the corn fields sure do give you some privacy.

I have the 8QT Ultra and love it for cooking food fast during the work week. Hasn't produced anything that comes close to the BGE in flavor. I've cooked short ribs in it several times. Haven't tried the SV aspect out yet, I have my doubts without a circulator and heat coming from the bottom.

Try this pot roast. I swear that hunk of chuck roast was among the best beef I've ever had! Certainly as good as anything I've ever cooked on the egg. Takes about 2 1/2 hours.

Really hard to over imbibe on adult beverages in under 45 minutes!  Takes all the fun out of it!
