Shrove Tuesday is today!  The annual international pancake race was held this morning in Liberal KS, and we won!  Our gal beat Amy Butler from Olney England.  See results below:

I'd never heard of pancake day until a few weeks ago. Where I live, its pazckis today, a Polish donut filled w. jam. Over the past 10 - 20 years, a few places have started offer King Cakes, a'la New Orleans (and lots of bourbon.)

S'pose I should do something for dinner. At least I've some maple syrup on hand.

Do potato pancakes count? That's one of the few things my Dad taight me to cook.

In New Orleans they call it Fat Tuesday (last day of celebration of Mardi Gras) but I'm not aware of any other holiday designation here...

EDIT:  Oh wait, in South Dakota, the Taco John's chain had a "Taco Tuesday" promotion with a hideously-obnoxious radio commercial, where they kept yelling "Taco Tuesday!!" over and over.  A local Mom-n-Pop food stand then started a "Weiner Wednesday" radio commercial, where a bunch of folks on Quaaludes recited "Weiner Wednesday" over and over, real slow and droll.  Can't remember the name of the place, but I guess their business really picked up!  Good times.

For many centuries, Lent was basically vegan.  No meat, fish, poultry, dairy, or eggs.  The main point wasn't that "no pancakes" was a big deal, so let's eat a lot of pancakes, but simply that pancakes were an easy way to use up all of the eggs and butter that you couldn't use anymore until Easter.

Over the last century or two, people have come to hardly fast at all, anymore, in most Churches.  Most people in the Orthodox Church still fast this way during Lent.  But because Easter, and therefore Lent, are calculated differently in the Orthodox Church, we start Lent on a Monday, not a Wednesday, so there's no "Mardi gras" (French for "fat Tuesday").  We have a whole week, though, before Lent starts when we can't have meat, anymore, but we can still have eggs, cheese and some other things.

Anyway, that's the deal on pancakes before the first day of Lent in Churches that fast during Lent, and begin Lent on a Wednesday.

I love Dutch Babies too but they ain't the same thing. They remind me more of a funnel cake than a pancake.
