Dealing with neoighbours

So we are in a low rise block of apartments . It’s made up of 3 layers of units; the bottom and top are private duplexes with balconies on their upper floors. The middle layer is social flats and most don’t have balconies. Our deed doesn’t restrict use of the balcony at all.

We thought great and got a BGE egg given both our neighbours have a gas grill as did our apartments last owner. So paid UK silly prices and set it up for the first fire and within 3 minutes the apartment diagonally above was shouting out saying BBQ was against the rules.

Our deed says it isn’t but I don’t want to get into a situation with them given the issues they could cause. I thought about using a fan to try and disperse smoke but wondered if any of you had overcome such situations?

Cook some amazing food on your egg and invite them over to share. Smoke the peace pipe and listen to any legit concerns. Egg on bro, with respect for close neighbors.

It sounds like you need better lump. Something a little more neutral in flavor

I will let someone in a more akin situation give you a better reply. In the US many apartments (flats) only permit gas grills. Your lease seems sound but I would be concerned about them contacting some government agency.

Even Royal Oak can be strong starting out. Now add oak.....I can see how the neighbors might not like that starting out. That's some heavy smoke. I'd try without the oak next time

Most apartments allow nothing here, not even plants, but our contract is silent. The fire department/brigade recommend not having them but they’ve no legal authority to actually ban them.

im not sure of the US equivalent to leasehold, we “buy” the lease which is typically over 100 years (ours is circa 300 years) with an additional annual fee of circa $100/year for rent and then the cost of maintaining the communial areas. The flats above are rented per month and if you don’t get social it’d be $3,000 a month.

theres no governmental agency they can contact, even the company that owns the building is unlikely to do much unless they argue it’s unreasonably antisocial. They can however throw things from their window to our balcony etc which we’d rather avoid

I think you at least need to let them know it’s not against the rules and you intend to use it. Offer to do your best to let them know when you willl be firing it up so they can close their windows or whatever.

Buy a propane tank. Put next to the egg. Connect a hose between the two. If they give you any lip, yell "It's a bloody propane grill, you donkey!"

If they continue to give you grief just kill them in their sleep.

You may want to try bringing your temp up very slowly and not put any smoking wood in until you’re up to temp. Use less airflow starting it off but give more time for it to come up to temp. Synergy that’ll help keep the smoke down. Doing low and slow should generate a ton of smoke compare to grilling chickens. But I do agree you should have a block party to in them over.

Ugh - when the neighbors smell smoke around here, they come over and invite themselves. (And I do the same).

Maybe you could try some of this charcoal that supposedly doesn’t create much smoke and ease your neighbors into the egg??

This happens here in the States as well. I once had a 100 year land lease with a trust on a property. When I sold the business I had on that property, I had the option to transfer the lease, which I did.

I'm another UK Egger. I had a similar problem with our neighbours, it was mainly the smoke generated when the Egg was getting fired up. I bought a looftlighter which solved the problem.
