Rehab a used egg or buy a new one?

A few years ago I inherited a medium egg. After using it for a few years now, I am hooked! The trouble is some of the parts are starting to fall apart. The actual egg itself seems like it's still in good shape. However the firebox and fire grate have since broken beyond repair, and I also need a new gasket and thermometer. It's basically non-functioning in its current state.

All told, this looks to be upwards of a $250 investment in replacement parts, which isn't too bad for an egg that was gifted to me. My concern though is will I be throwing good money after bad if the other components start to go without warranty protection. If the egg itself cracks, then I've thrown that $250 away.

Should I consider just ponying up the grand or so for a new one with a lifetime warranty, or roll the dice that this one will keep on with a few new parts? Has anyone experienced breaks in the egg itself?

  • Like you I was gifted my medium and I've had a couple internals break. I opted for replacing them because the medium served me well and years later the pieces I bought are still fine. Even after replacement costs it was cheaper than a new egg.

That being said I would buy a large to go along with it if I had the means.  The medium limits my cooks more than I like and the large would fix that while leaving my medium for smaller cooks or sides. If that value is there for you would depend on your cook size though.

For 250 I would fix it up
new firebox comes with the warrenty
  • I would fix and save for an XL. The difference from a large is substantial and frankly now that I have a LG and an XL I would prefer a MD for faster cooks like steaks and burgers vs the large.  The XL does ALL my low and slow these days.

  • That’s a tough decision. I had a large, but sold it and got the XL from a local dealer so he could handle any warranty issues for many years. More of a “piece of mind” thing!
