Bought a Medium, Does anyone love theirs?

  • Man I just bought one of those high que grates. Only problem is I ordered one for a large egg. It still fits but sits a little higher up. Would that still be ok? The medium is supposed to have a 6.7 inch, the one I got is a 9 inch.

I use the large high que in my large, medium, and mini max. I use the medium high que in the mini. Getting a larger grate for lump distribution and airflow really helps these cookers. You’ll be good with the one you bought.
  • Man that is good to know. I was pissed when it came in.
  • Keep your original smaller grate for low and slow cooks that require more lump.

If any of you medium guys are in need of accesories pm me.  I was planning on adding a new medium but my plan changed.  I've got all brand new - never used accessories.  New woo, stones, half stones, KAB, smokeware cap etc.

I don't want to piecemeal it, but if someone wants it all for a smoking price , shoot me a pm.

  • I've got a medium and I love it.  The mods I have are a KAB, Smokeware cap, cast iron plate setter, and grate stacker.  I own a lot of other smokers and grills so capacity is not an issue for me.  To me, it's not so much the size, but cooking on the BGE produces great food and is so much fun to cook on.

Even if I were only cooking for myself, I couldn't imagine going with anything less than an XL.

That seems kind of small, you should be aiming for a XXL.

I would have if the price jump to XXL hadn't been so steep.  It's always easy to scale down than up IMO.

I have owned a sole Medium for many years and here are the difficulties you will have:

    1) Unless you have a KAB, a clog in two or more venting holes dramatically impacts temperature--like, you ain't gett'in no temperature to cook anything. Buying a Medium? You must also buy a Kick Ash Basket.

    2) You are living in a Large world. All the cool accessories are manufactured for Larges and then maybe XLs. As a Medium owner you will never have a CI platesetter, Woo, CI table nest, or whatever contraption CGW comes up with that allows 4 or 5 grilling skills to occur at the same time.

    3) I have never tried but I'm sure you'll never be able to do a marathon brisket cook without adding fuel. They just plain don't hold that much lump. For example I cook a couple brats or hamberders for lunch and then say "I'm just gonna turn this thing down to 225 or so and in a while I'll throw on some ribs for dinner." I'm adding lump before the ribs go on because there is no way there is 2 1/2 hours of lump left in there. It's always sucks to add lump when your food is 1/2 cooked. Always.

    4) You will always be a bastard, red headed step child on this forum. That little brother that never gets any respect.

    Here are some positives:

    1) Pizza and loaves of bread. A Mediums 15" platesetter is the perfect size for a pizza or a loaf of bread. As a matter of fact, no pizza peel I know of is really wide enough to do ones larger than 13-14" anyway.

    2) Less lump. I'm sure L and XL users are secretly jealous how far a bag of lump can go. Like, I think they must only get four or five cooks out of a bag. <snort, giggle>

    3) Less time and fuel to get it started. When I used cubes one would work, two if I was in a hurry. How many cubes does it take to get a XL going? 4????

But at the end of the day, always remember: BGE's are just overpriced flowerpots and it's not the tools that that make a good cook, it's the skill of the person using them. Buying expensive tools is not going to make better food.

I have a medium. On my last brisket cook i went 17 hours with lump left over. I have never tried what you did with multiple items as there are only two of us, and i bought a mini max to handle the burger/wing side when i have a crowd over.
You are right about the red headed step child-she sure is.

    Medium BGE in Cincinnati OH.

I bought the medium first. And i love it for smaller cooks and searing etc. I cooked a 12 lb butt on it yesterday which I have done a lot in the past. Whole chickens, it does great. When I need room for ribs, 21 lb turkey or brisket I go to the XL.

Thank goodness! I was trying to convince myself not to buy another medium (my favorite egg) just to meet up and get a smokin deal.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

When I bought my second XL, I could have sold the first one and been close enough to the cost of a XXL in exchange for the XL I already had.  I decided in the end that having two XLs was better than one XXL.  I am sure there are people that the XXL works better for their needs, and I would believe that someone has a few of them in their back yard.  I still really like the smaller eggs tho.  I tend to think about each cook on the medium (just works really well for the family), but I like having the smaller ones around kind of as a hobby.
