Shim Washers on BGE Daisy Wheel

Has anyone ever tried using shim washers under the washer and screw that hold the daisy wheel to the original BGE top vent? It looks to me like the right combination of shim washers placed around the outside of the housing that accepts the screw holding the daisy wheel, might put enough pressure to add resistance to the "free wheel" design. Too many washers and it may be hard to turn, or tend to tighten or back out the screw. Just the right amount of shim washers, perhaps just enough resistance to the daisy wheel to keep it from free wheeling when the lid is opened. I realize there are other options, but so far, the only ones I can find do not let the smoke vent directly out the top like the BGE stock vent does.

    I've personally never used the daisy wheel. I have smokeware caps on my eggs, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

    Just orientate the daisy wheel so it does not swing when you open the lid. In other words keep the screw at 6 o’clock

    I used a shim washer, and even installed a spring on the outside (with a longer 6mm bolt.  High temp de-tempered the spring after several months, and it fell shut at times. Finally gave up and bought the Smokeware cap.  Problem solved!

    I tried it as well. The problem I had was that the bolt would back out. I wasn’t willing to apply anything like locktight or something that might lock up or burn off, get gooey etc. or cross-thread it etc. Never tried to engineer further. Figured I would do as others have and get a smokeware cap

    Lots of good feed back. All Good. I will have my BGE sitting under a covered deck and would prefer to have the smoke exit straight out the top of the chimney opposed to being directed to the side. If I understand correctly, those permanent raincap designs would exhaust the smoke out two opposite sides. The one on the back would be fine, but not the one on the front. Perhaps side to side might work. I plan on installing a fan from a bracket that will provide a light breeze just above the chimney to catch the smoke/fumes, and take them to open air. Thanks for the input.

    Don't overthink this.

    My question is not in regards to the 6 o'clock screw being oriented to the front of the dome. I understand that and how it works. My question is the daisy wheel itself and the tab that falls to the 12 o'clock position when opened. Daisy wheel drops to full open position every time. Then you have to memorize where  you had it set to maintain the same tempreture you had before opening the dome.

    Not real sure what you are missing in the answer that @CarolinaQ just showed you.

    If yours is that loose @milesvdustin advice may hold some water. Once your wheel is all gummed up and with the other advice given you won’t even worry about it. Also open you lid gently, this is a good habit to get into if you value arm hair.
