Respect the Temp

I was firing up my Xl this morning for a brisket cook. Came inside to season the brisket, my wife came downstairs and we started talking about any additional items I needed from the store. Suddenly I said s&%t I left the vents wide open and ran outside to check the temp. to my surprise I was at 220 degrees - I thought coming up to temp very nice. I adjusted my vents for a 275ish cpook and grabbed a few apple wood chunks to add some flavor. When I turned back the temp was at 50 degrees. As I put my hand on the handle I realized I had wrapped the gauge and she was screaming hot. I waited a few minute and the temp was dropping fast. I carefully open the XL adjusted my layers, added a drip pan and I was back on temp.
My point is respect the gauge and use common sense - I should have known the gauge was wrapped from the amount of time I have the vents wide open. Lucky me I didn't lose any arm or face hair (this time). I will say, that I used my welding gloves when I did open it - I opened it very slowly letting the air enter - making sure a fire ball didn't come racing out at me.
Enjoy your Sunday cooks and keep an eye on the gauge...

Damn, wrapped around to 220F, surprised you didn’t get agave full of fire. I assume your opening technique includes a burp.Large BGE - McDonald, PA

Why wrap the gauge in the first place?
-
Same thing happened to me last weekend. Made it all the way to 300... Only took about 20 minutes...Rockwall, TX • LBGE, Big Hat Ranger offset smoker, Really old 22" Weber Kettle, Pile of Pecan and Post Oak...

Accident, he walked away with the vents open and the temperature pegged out of him. Airflow drives the temp, and with the vents open the egg can see extreme temps.unoriginalusername said:Why wrap the gauge in the first place?Large BGE - McDonald, PA -
He meant the egg was so hot the dial wrapped all the way around and back to 220.unoriginalusername said:Why wrap the gauge in the first place?New Orleans LA -

Did you have your placesetter in? When I cook pizza I crank it up to 600 with the placesetter, I keep waiting for it to crack...JMCXL said:I was firing up my Xl this morning for a brisket cook. No plate in yet. It was coming next. But with pizza I have had it in at temps above 700 with no issues...BGEChicago said:
