    powder coating is chemically bonded through electrifying the material and then its baked and set.  you really cant get much better protection than that.  paint scratches really easy and isn't truly corrosion resistant.  powder coating is expense but well worth the effort and money.  i have redone some old bicycles and things, had them powder coated they come out amazing every time and have lasted for 10+ years.
