Well, after six years (or so) worth of use, my XL’s platesetter broke last night 60/30 split. Picked it up and it snapped. Weird... Anyway after reading up, I don’t really want to salvage it beyond cleaning it up to use it as a half moon. After reading up, I know that many others have experienced this same issue. Since I am not “repairing it”, I want advice on what to do:
Options:
1. Buy a new platesetter. I got six years or more and worked great. Too fragile though to just go buy another; considering there are options...
2. Cast iron platesetter? I’ve read enough to see a 50/50 split on a “yes” or “no” to this option.
3. Living in N.TX. gives me easy access to the CGS. I should probably stop by and talk to them directly, right? I would want a simple straightforward set up that gives me what the platesetter does without going overboard.
Help me spend money without breaking the bank. A new BGE deflector would be $140 or so... I’d like to give $200-250 (or less) with what I do next. Feasible???
Please weigh in and share your wisdom.
Thanks everybody!!!

Strongest possible endorsement for a trip to CGS before anything else. After that you can adjust your spend accordingly. However, this site will suck your $$ in the blink of an eye. CGS. At the very minimum you could get a stone and spider to replace the plate setter

My answer is also CGS. Especially if you don't have a PSWoo or similar set up. Just to get the grate to gasket level it's worth the upgrade. As for what type of deflector. I would just buy one of Tom's as opposed to the BGE PS. My PS has the beginning stages of a crack right down the middle and when it finally gives up the ghost I will just buy a stone from CGS if I cant make 2 half stones out of it.

FWIW, I prefer the platesetter with vertical legs cut off over just the round stone on my AR. With multiple meats on the grate I like having the ability to to have more heat deflection.Milton, GA

I use an older Woo type setup in my XL most of the time.
Lets me cook raised direct or add Spider or simple cross bars to hold flat pizza stone for indirect cooking.
Tom has some stuff on sale right now as well.
Love to cook raised direct on the XL. Tom also has some great prices on great brands of lump. His place is always worth a stop.

Thanks @Photo Egg. I’ve been by the shop, but it’s been a while. When I went last time, I didn’t have a broken platesetter
Glad to hear there’s deals to be had. Anything you wish you had, or would have done different w/your current setup? XLBGE, SS tableMcKinney, TX. -
This is a no brainier. Get thee to CGS. You won’t regret it.
I futzed around with various homebrewed contraptions before springing for an AR and other accessories for the large. Only regretted not doing so earlier. It’s an elegant solution for all kinds of egging setups. Some of the best $$ spent on eggcessories.
And be rest assured that CGS is not the type of operation to try and separate you from as much of your money as they can. If Tom doesn’t think you need it, he’ll tell you right up front.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

For me, its rare that I need to cook on multiple levels so I don't use my XL adjustabe rig very often. But the Rig has incredible versatility when needed.MCRyan said:Thanks @Photo Egg. I’ve been by the shop, but it’s been a while. When I went last time, I didn’t have a broken platesetter

I really like the simplicity of one large, raised cooking grate. The Woo type rack with just a pizza stone is my go to. Flat pizza stone also stores easier than a plate setter.
Lots of different set ups, just takes times to find what works best for you and what you like to cook.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Almost all of my cooks are raised direct on the R&B combo - definitely my go-to configuration. And if you need multiple levels or indirect cooking, it can do that too.DFW - 1 LGBE & Happy to Adopt More...

Sounds like a solid plan (woo type rack and the pizza stone. I’m excited.

Does CGS make their own plate setter that works with the PSWOO2? Just wondering. Next year’s the end of the warranty for my bge plate setter.

@thetrim I’ll take note of that
@Powak I finally checked out CGS on my pc instead of my phone (good idea. Easier to see what I was looking at). I’m pretty sure the XL Woo Ring with handles and round stone is ideal for me. Seems to be the best PS replacement imaginable. Not sure if the the 17.5 or 19” stone is a better choice. Any input from the “powers that be” is appreciated I’ll find out when I head over this weekend.XLBGE, SS tableMcKinney, TX. -
call tom at cgs, he will set you up with the best option for your needs, he cooks on an xl as well. easy guy to talk to and he wont try to oversell things you dont need.

Update - True to my word, I went to the CGS to “consider options” today. I thought I was set on the Woo/ceramic stone set up. Walked out with the Woo/adjustable rig combo. How can you not go with this set up??? Another truth is that Tom is great. I’m a fan of him and his store. Believe the testimonials people! I’m Excited to get going on the new setup this weekend!!!
Thanks again for all the suggestions and wisdom. With that, I’ll pay it forward with some advice: leave your wallet in the glove box if you go the the CGS and want to save money! YOLO!!!

I got the adjustable rig R&B a few years ago, don't know how I lived without it. I gave my platesetter a friend. I would pay CGS a visit and have them show you what options you have available, then you can make an informed decision._________________________________________________Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!Large BGE 2006, Mini Max 2014, 36" Blackstone, Anova Sous Vide

I’ve gotta do the same thing. The mobile site’s a little confusing. I forgot to mention my eggs a large. Does CGS make a stone that goes in bottom of the PSWOO2?MCRyan said:@thetrim I’ll take note of that

@Powak- they have a bracket deal that goes into the holders for the PS on the PSWOO2 and then you can use the CGS stone. FWIW-Here's a link to the above mentioned rig-

FYI - the Woo I bought is the version “with handles”. My oem grate that came with my XL had two little metal “extensions” on the support rails (bottom side of the grate). These extend into the ovals on either side of the grate that should simply slide over the handles of the woo. The rig then slides over the woo handles. I was having to bend the handles of the woo manuver the grate over them. I should have took a picture, sorry...
Anyway, I hacked the little extensions off with my RotoZip. All good now. I love this set up!!!XLBGE, SS tableMcKinney, TX. -
