PSWoo & Half grid/stone fitment question

Ordered some additional accessories for my LBGE w/PSWoo, spider and extender from CGS.  Got two 15" half stones and an 18" half alloy grid based on wanting to create some different direct/indirect zones.

To my surprise, the 15" half stone and the 18" alloy grid don't fit on top of the spider inside the Woo, nor does the 18" half grid and an 18" half cast iron griddle fit on the main level since they don't have the cut out notches for the Woo handles.

Has anyone tried the new BGE eggspander grids on a PSWoo to see if they fit around the Woo handles?  Otherwise my metal blade and power tools will be making some fraken mods

@pgprescott, thanks for the heads-up but egg killed my message notifications months ago.

We don't recommend the half grid on the lower level of the PSWoo or EGG Eggspander.  If you want this type of set-up, just use the EGG full grid on the fire ring. This way you can use the most productive part of the grill - the center.  Using a half grid cheats the cook on heat and cooking area.

If you want to put a half stone under the grid atop the PSWoo, then use the spider up. Spider legs go in the triangle parts of the PSWoo, picture below.  Half stone goes on the spider. It puts the stone closer to the grid which provides better indirect performance than a stone on the fire ring.  I think that's our 17.5" stone in the picture.

We also don't recommend a half grid above a full/half grid on the PSWoo or EGGspander. You can use a half grid on the PSWoo, but again, we don't recommend it.

With two grids on PSWoo or EGGspander levels, It's approx. 4 inches between grids. That not enough room vertically to actively get at food on the lower grid. Folks tell us it's very frustrating. If we thought it worthwhile, we would have had it back in 2006ish when we first came out with the woo.

We can do half grids on the rig as it's 6" tall and the half grid goes to back of the rig, allowing full access to the lower grid.

  • Thanks Tom, the idea I had was to use the KAB divider in my KAB so I had a fire under the grate for searing steaks and then a raised grid over a half stone for finishing like the setup pictured below on a KJ.

what's the best way to recreate that?  I have a CGS Woo, extender, 2 15" stones, spider and 18" half grid

Maybe I am wrong, but can’t you set a half
stone down low and then put the original grid in followed by the extender? Half the original grid will be over the stone, but the other half will be over the coals.

This is what I use for a reverse sear on my filets last night.  Worked out perfect!  Indirect, high in the dome with a half stone, then seared at the felt level at 600....

for large egg, with the 15" half stone and Spider, you can do this set-up.

You need to be cautious with this type of set-up because it is easy to get non uniform temperatures over the half of the grilling area that is direct, open to the fire. Same holds true for smbishop's set-up above. Note his cook is three small filet steaks, not big strips or ribeye steaks

Be cautious because the direct grilling area is so small, the food gets pushed near the edge and over the curved part of the fire bowl where the burning lump is not as intense as the middle of the firebox. The best area to grill is the middle of the firebox and the stone takes half of it away.

The Large Adjustable Rig is much better at half grids than the PSWoo or EGGspander.  With half grids on the Large Rig, it's up to 6" between grids and the half grid is on the backside of the Rig/egg.  6" and on the backside allows complete access to a full grid below.  You can add a stone under the half grid too, as pictured below.

There are multiple ways to incorporate a half stone on the large Rig - with full grid, 1-1/2 grids or stair step grids. Below is a picture of stair step grids.

@smbishop, thanks for the pics.  Next time you might try this:

put the CI grid on the fire ring, set PSWoo set-up on it and use the EGG Stainless grid atop the PSWoo, where the CI grid is in the picture. This way you can do the first part of the reverse sear on upper extender 16D grid, pull the entire PSWoo set-up and sear the filets on a nice hot ci grid sitting on the fire ring.

You could also use a bigger, full stone on the Stainless grid instead of the half stone with no impact on searing temps on the lower ci grid. Ideal if doing strips or ribeyes.
