Have a request for shipping to UK, may need advise. Who pays VAT, how much is it?

You send it with the customs declaration on it. This states the value. When it gets here, if it's over about $20 the customer will get a card asking them to pay up. Duty is usually small, if anything, max 3%. VAT is 20% payable on the goods value and the shipping cost added up. Plus a handling fee. Last time I had a small item shipped the fee was £8. It does all add up. Obviously, the VAT / VAT threshold depend on the DECLARED value. Some sellers under declare, just make sure the invoice in the package matches the declaration.

By the way, stuff sent as a gift gets no VAT or other charges. If your customer knows someone who can buy locally and send as a gift, that would work.

This is what he wants, can't give it as a gift. What is VAT threshold ?

I don't think $20 will cover that. Plus, that's big and will need properly crating or it will arrive damaged. When you're sending a big box like that, contact an international freight forwarder.Tspud1 said:This is what he wants, can't give it as a gift. What is VAT threshold ?

Outside of the EU there are different bandings, even for gifts. Have a look at the VAT and Customs Duty sections of this page:

Never mind the VAT, where's it going in the UK? I need to pop around there with a few beers!Tspud1 said:This is what he wants, can't give it as a gift. What is VAT threshold ?
Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay -
@tspud1 as suggested above, reach out to a freight forwarder. Their job is to understand duties, VAT, policies, for each country. They will charge a bit more but will coordinate the entire delivery. One item to note- if you haven’t shipped internationally before, make sure you use treated/export compliant pallets.

We export products to many areas, thanks for reminding me. I remember having to have wood with HT markedWolfpack said:@tspud1 as suggested above, reach out to a freight forwarder. You're joking! Daughter & son-in-law live there. Bellingdon in fact - just outside Chesham. Perhaps it's my birthday present???Tspud1 said:Other girls may try to take me away

CPFC1905, Customer has a business there and may be getting a few extra smaller tables/carts. Does your Daughter & son-in-law have a BGE? I had never heard of Chesam before. I follow English Premiere League and that gives me an idea where some cities are located, Watford would be close.

By far the most economical shipping alternative is a container load. If they can afford to buy enough stock, that reduces the unit shipping cost greatlyTspud1 said:CPFC1905, Customer has a business there and may be getting a few extra smaller tables/carts. That's how we normally ship to the Mideast and also bring in products. I dont think my customer wants to make that big of leap

That's interesting - the outdoor kitchen / decent BBQ set-up isn't big here - mainly due to weather. I asked a local BBQ dealer about it, and he said he makes far more money out of fireplaces & stoves. Pizza ovens got more popular this year.Tspud1 said:CPFC1905, Customer has a business there and may be getting a few extra smaller tables/carts. Does your Daughter & son-in-law have a BGE? Daughter and S-i-L don't have a BGE, although did buy me mine as a gift in 2017 (LBGE inset to mahogany table). The guy living opposite them does have one and he was an early adopter for a few years back. I gave him the link to this forum last Summer.
Sadly Chesham is near Watford, but they are a terrible team and best ignored. You'll find the most attractive PL team hail from the concrete utopia called Croydon. Google my user name and see what comes up. Also, you can join in the fun on the 'We call it football over here' thread on this very forum.Other girls may try to take me away
