Excuse the newbie if I’m posting in the wrong place but I am costing out shipping and wondered if anybody had shipped a Big green egg to the UK from the US before. If so, what’s the most cost effective way to do it? I’m looking at a Medium size BGE plus nest. Thanks

There are are a couple of eggheads on your side of the pond that post here. They can probably give you info on where to get one over there. @Eoin is one. Maybe @Stormbringer

Shipping one to the UK rather than buying one from a UK dealer is probably a bad idea if only for warranty purposes.

I bought both my Eggs in the UK, I live in the Midlands. I really doubt you'll save any money by shipping from the US and if you have warranty claims, this may be an issue. There's a car festival this weekend (Carfest South) where the Socal dealership will be offering 10% off the entire Egg range.

  • Thanks folks, I appreciate your help. I didn’t realise that there may be warranty related issues. I figured that the warranty would be valid anywhere in the world??

Interesting to hear that So-cal are offering a discount. I’ve been looking for a while now and I’ve never come across a dealer offering any kind of a deal. I’m not too far from Car-Fest south either....

Yes there are cars, but only tiny ones compared to your ones

Topstak in Monmouth regularly have bundle deals, I bought our Minimax from them. Good luck at the car fest, 10% is the minimum, depending on what you buy you might be able to get an even better deal.

From the BGE website warranty page:

    WARRANTY CLAIM PROCEDURE:

A valid proof of purchase receipt from an Authorized Dealer will be required to make a Warranty claim. For Warranty support, contact the Authorized Dealer from which the item was purchased.

You may contact any Authorized Dealer if the EGG was purchased within the United States. For EGGs purchased in countries outside the United States, Warranty claims are handled by an Authorized Dealer or Distributor in the country of purchase.

Please refer to the INTERNATIONAL section of the BGE website at BigGreenEgg.com to locate the Authorized BGE International Distributor in your particular region. Warranty claims must be made through an Authorized Dealer or Distributor within the original country of purchase.

Prices are pretty steep here, but you have to remember the 20% VAT, which would be added to both the purchase and shipping cost of the Egg from the USA.
  • Pretty sure I saw eggs at Harrod's when I was in London last year

You will and they frequently have 10% off weekends... not often is Harrods the cheapest store in town!

Yes, admittedly I did not know about this until a friend of mine pointed it out. It’s tough but it looks like this purchase is going to have to wait

Do you have an idea of which size Egg you are looking to buy? Reason I ask is that we are a household of two adults, no kids, and we cook almost all of our meals in the Minimax. Assuming Socal are offering 10% off the list price of that today, you're looking at around £560.

I agree with @Stormbringer, we have an MMX and an XL with 3 / 4 large boys still living at home. We use ths MMX a lot more than the XL and you can do a lot on it with a bit of organisation.

Organisation can include this ... two level cook with a simple custom built grid. I've cooked for four in the Minimax with that:

Same here but may other Egg is a large. Only problem I have is like today when 3 racks of baby backs won't fit the MMX. But I'll just do it in stages.

  • We’re a family of 4. I was thinking of the medium sized BGE or the KJ classic. I had previously thought about the MMX but don’t want to buy one only to find it’s not big enough. So last year I found myself cooking up plenty of pork shoulder and the odd beef brisket here and there. The smoker I have is an entry level smoker and not great at maintaining temperature which is why I’m now after a Kamado style egg. This represents a significant purchase for me and I just want to get it right.

If I were to go MMX, in addition to the egg itself, what else would I need to purchase in order to get cooking?

Great job, and your step by step instructions make me believe even someone as ham fisted as me could pull that off.

A MMX bundle would be fine, e.g. this:

However, what I'd suggest is to work out what you want to cook and determine whether the MMX can handle it. If it can't, it's not the right purchase. For example, it won't fit a pizza for a family of four ... heck, I cook a pizza in our large for the two of us. Having said that I've done ribs, chili and pork shoulder (trimmed to fit) for 4 on the MMX.

Look at it this way ... it is probably a one off purchase of a product with a lifetime guarantee for most of the important (expensive) pieces. Yes the Large is way more expensive than the MMX, like nearly double the price. But let's say you Egg for 10 years, the differential works out to less than £70/year. With one cook per week (trust me, it will be more), that's just over £1 per cook.

FWIW, I don't work for Big Green Egg, just a happy owner and maths freak :D. Also, Socal have 10% off ALL Egg stuff until the end of the month. Just quote the code Carfest2018 .

  • I enjoy cooking on the MM more than I do my Large. I've found setup and cleanup to be much easier and its quicker to get to cooking temps. Once there I can hold the temp better on the MM with just the bottom vent and the daisy wheel. I still have problems holding  my desired temp on the Large if I'm not using my FlameBoss.

If you need more room then SmokeWare has a rig with a swinging top grate that allows you to double up.

If you are like most of us you will end up with multiple eggs anyway so go MM then add a large if the need ever arises.

Best bet is to get one at an Eggfest. I got mine at the Sunshine State Eggfest for $379 last year. Don't know the current prices.

I was quoted $599 at two different dealers this past weekend, which was only the egg. One had a $699 startup package with the egg, convEGGtor, ash tool, starter blocks, and a bag of charcoal. The MM comes with the nest handler.

  • FYI, just heard from my friend who runs an import/export business here in the UK. Cheapest method would be sea freight at a cost of £323 + VAT (20%) ( around $500). On top of that, the US retailer would have to get the product to a freight forwarder and may charge for doing so. Then there are numerous tolls and levies to consider, so pretty much as suspected, this idea has been knocked on the head.

I will have my egg though.....time to hatch plan B (if you will pardon the pun).
