Blackstone griddle question

JMCXL
JMCXL Posts: 1,524
has anyone used one of the small 16oz tanks to run one of the 24” or 36” griddles? If so, was it successful and did it last long enough to cook anything?  Looking to pick one up for a tailgate weekend.

I haven’t, but I suspect they wouldn’t go far.  The 36, at least, is a fuel hog.

I get a couple cooks on the small bottles using my 22" Blackstone. I think they would be last resort/backup on the larger ones or using 1 or 2 burners.
    Thank you,

I have a buddy that has a 17". He was getting 3-4 cooks per bottle. That would be great for camping, but I'd find it a nuisance for home use

Thanks for the feedback, kinda what I thought. Dont think I need the 36”. The 17 might be a little small for my needs. Will check out a 22 or 28” if that is the correct sizing

If you used one on a 36", with an adaptor of some sort, it would freeze the bottle. As LP becomes a gas the pressure gradient drops causing a drop in temp. If the ambient temp x surface area of that tank isn't sufficient enough to compensate, the tank will cool and once below a certain point, about 26 degrees, it fails to leave to bottle at a rate enough to maintain the flame. A one pound bottle on a 36 would last about two minutes @ 80. If you want to use a BS for a tailgate, which is a great idea, just buy a 20# tank.

I like the looks of this 22 I saw at Walmart a while back.  It all folds up nice!  Seriously considering it for camping and not lugging 36 around

Just wondering here...why do you say the 17" one is too small? There is just the two of us, but even at that there is mucho square inches of cooking space. Granted the 17" doesn't have different heat zones for cooking, but for burgers and faitias served fast and furious our 17" works!

After posting the 17” comment I was back on the BS website and started rethinking my thought on a 17”. Currently I am looking at the 17 or 22”. First I need to convince my wife this is needed.

I have noticed that my BS 17 actually gets hotter using a small one pound bottle verses a 20 pound bottle with hose.

Turn off the grill before changing bottles.  I wish I would have thought that through the one time I did that.  And I like the 22" over the 17".  I have both.

i get about 3 cooks out of one bottle on my 22" and it works great.  I need to get the adapter for a larger tank but I haven't gotten around to it.

the 22 will be fine with the green bottles, especially since they come as a 4 pack.  now in the back of an open truck the green bottles are fine but if its going in a closed up vehicle i would toss the used green bottle at the site. they tend to leak after opening.  these are not as good as the old green bottles  i used as a kid

I  use the bottles when doing a tailgate lite. They work fine and depending on what you are cooking and for how long.....you will be fine. I have the hook up for the large tanks and do use on occasion. Point here is this...I like the 17 because it is portable and easy to store on a shelf in my garage. The tanks don’t take up much room in transport. For tailgating they are ideal. For home use I have the option depending on my length of cook and how hot I am cooking at. Always keep a couple of the Smalls around anyhow for emergencies.

I'm amazed how much it does use. I filled up a Propane tank in May or so and it ran out after about 8-10 cooks. Luckily I had a back up but man this thing uses a ton.

If you are lugging the 36 inch out for a tailgate then it is no big deal to carry the big propane tank as well ;)

Here is a thread on the 22 with stand/cover/adapter hose. If I understand correctly this works with both the small camping bottles and a 20 lb tank.
