Needed Accessories

Hey everyone,

I've had my Large BGE for 8 weeks now and have cooked 8 straight weekends on it. I'm originally from Memphis, so pulled pork is a favorite of mine along with ribs.

I've got several accessories and am looking for a few more specific items. But I also thought I would ask what else is needed.

Accessories
Ash removal
ConvEGGtor
Pizza Stone
Cast Iron Grate
Grid gripper
Cast Iron Dutch Oven
Kick Ash Pan
Smokeware top

Looking for...
Meat Thermometer/Grate Thermometer
Glove setup

What are you recommendations for the things I I'm looking for above and what else do I need to be looking at acquiring?

Also, who do I need to be following or listening to online for BGE cooking?

Thanks!

  • I would start buying out of necessity. There are so many things out there you could go broke just figuring out what you like.

That being said I love my Kickash baskets and Woo setup from CGS. And the Smokeware cap helps in those Tennessee summer downpours we’ve been getting.

Welcome! Take some more time and see what you really end up needing. It's easy to spend other people's money here. Plus you won't end up with stuff collecting dust on a shelf that you never end up using.

I'm sure others will end up helping you with the gloves and grate thermometer. What type of gloves are you looking for? Welding gloves or food gloves?

I definitely recommend an instant read thermometer if you don't have one already. That would be my only suggestion

i like the thermoworks smoke for the wireless thermometer, if you are going to get a controller you might look at the FB300 instead.  i bought the adjustable rig from the CGS but that was out of need for cooking for larger groups.  Best advice is just have fun, drink something cold and enjoy the time outdoors.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Above all, have fun.
I'm with @WeberWho regarding a good instant read thermo.  Beyond that sort out where your think you need something you don't have-and not just because it get's mentioned here.  As noted, this place can suck your wallet/CC dry.

Thermoter with wireless receiver is great-if you are prone to checking temp....
cast iron pan and/or griddle great too- Increases variety of flavors /textures -such as smashburgers

the world changes with a raised grid setup,  and an instant read therm for accurate meat temps.  those would be my first two investments with a new egg

I'm looking for a glove setup for doing the prep work on meat. I feel like just the nitrile gloves would be too thin for the heat. Didn't know what most people used.
  • @fishlessman

what kind of raised grid setup did you get? I saw that BGE is coming out with one later this year, but are there other options?

i use knit gloves from harbor freight under nitrile gloves.  works great for handling hot food pulling meat apart, cutting and serving.

i went with 2 fire bricks standin on edge on the lower grate with a second grid sitting on top of those for years.  when the ceramic grill store was first designing the grid setup i got one of the first ones. its hard to beat the adjustable rig with all the options it comes with.  either way you need to raise the grid, theres lots of ways to raise the grid.  you dont get the heat radiating downward off the dome if you are cooking below the felt line

Since I owned the Conveggtor/ Plate Setter already I got the PS Woo so that I could still use it.  I also bought the PS Woo platform and two half stones and loved the set up.

However after much use I would recomend the Woo, the Platform, (1) 1/2 stone for direct/ indirect cooking (which I do all the time) and the 13 X 17 Inch Oval Ceramic Stone for full indirect cooking.

You might as well go to CGS website and add everything under the large BGE section to the cart. You're going to end up with it all by the end.

  • +1 on CGS.  I have the adjustable rig for larger cooks as said before, but my favorite is a PSWoo with handles and a separate spider.  So many options with this rig and cooking raised at the felt line is definitely the sweet spot.  There is also this hidden piece I just got and will be trying out this weekend.

Agree above. Get a good Instant read thermo, A good pair of Welding gloves to remove the hot platesetter. Next would be a CGS PSWoo with extended rack, then I would worry about the temp controllers for low and slows. I have had my egg 8 months and still haven't bought one and don't see any need for it anytime soon.

Other stuff... as others have said, I'd buy out of nessessity in order to avoid spending $ on stuff that will just hold down your drawer bottoms.

How would you remove a burning hot platesetter when trying to do a reverse sear if you don't have welding gloves? Or how would you gauge the doneness of your steaks without a $90 thermopen? Or how would you make smash burgers without a blackstone, or how would you....you get where im going with this I think. =)

I echo the above. I started with just a plate setter and three bricks triple wrapped in foil. It instant read thermometer is the most important, because you can't eyeball internal temps. I have the PS-WOO and a CI grate from The CGS. I can't recommend it enough, but the adjustable rig has wider variation. Again, cook for a while and see what you're going to do a lot. Don't buy too much too fast. I have near $200 in sh!t I wish I had never bought.

I cook a lot of butts and ribs. Then I also cook a lot of chicken and steaks, thus the Woo. I have the Smokeware cap. It's awesome and easier, for me, to dial in lower temps than the DW. My KAB is arriving tomorrow, as my fire bowl broke and while I was spending money, I spent $80 more. It happens. Good luck and have fun!! Welcome!

Something to light the lump. I’m partial to the Looftlighter but many let the inner arsonist out with a weedburner. Quality lump like Rockwood is good . Then good rubs are useful. Meat Church, Dizzy Pig, and AlbuKirky are three companies that come to mind. No need to buy everything at once.
