Thanks everyone cleaned out the egg and all the holes were clogged. Figured these small pieces should be tossed. Pour this on top of the fresh lump?

Yep You could opt to get a HighQ charcoal grate. This will let the small pieces fall through and burn in the bottom of the egg instead of blocking airflow-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.
