Craigslist find - and first post

Was pretty excited about this find even though it was 1.5 hours away. 1 large, 1 small, with a custom metal table. It was part of an estate sale and listed at $625. The estate sale manager didn't know much about it and said it was in good condition and rarely used. Once I got there I realized that wasn't correct. But I had rented the Uhaul van, drove 1.5 hours, and stood in line. I got it down to $500.

I cleaned it a bit by scrubbing with tin foil balls but I haven't done the clean burn yet. I've cooked on it a couple times and am in the middle of a brisket cook. The spatchcock chicken I did this week was perfect. I'm more nervous about the taste on the brisket today. Any thoughts or experience with the flavor on used BGEs? Oh, I also found charcoal briquettes in the Small which was disheartening. I kind of feel like I rescued these Eggs and hope to give them a better life moving forward.

PS Accessories included cast iron PS, cast iron grates for both eggs, smokeware for LBGE.

Great deal!  Sure, they're a little weathered (small cap/handles) and dirty but everyone's is after you use it a few times.  A lot of people go without gaskets (and that's fine) but personally I'd scrape those off and put Rutland gasket's on them both.  Great find!! Enjoy.

    As above-great score right there.
Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Above all, have fun.
When I saw your forum name I immediately thought of Hawaii but realizing the time difference and the fact that you can't drive 1.5 hrs anywhere there I figure there has to be story behind it...

  • I intend to scrape those gaskets. I'm actually surprised how well it's holding temperature on this brisket cook with the state of the gasket.

Story behind the name. I'm from Hawaii and got my first egg when I was there. Joined the forum back then but hadn't posted. I moved to NorCal a year after I got my egg. Didn't want to risk shipping it and have been in a condo the last 4 years. Now we're in a house and the Egg was the first thing I bought. :)

Not bad at all.  There are a lot of rehab threads on here.  Search 'em out, and you'll be as good as new!  Congratulations!

don't worry about gaskets.  I haven't had them since 2007, and have been banging out great food.  gaskets are overrated.

The table itself probably cost twice the amount you paid for everything. You stole it!

I agree.  The table is worth every penny you paid.  Think of your purchase as getting a table at a reasonable price and two eggs for free.

That looks like one of @Tspud1 tables - easily worth way more than you paid for the whole package.  Congrats.

I agree, it does look like one of tspud1’s tables and quite a steal.  Welcome aboard from a fellow NorCal Egger.

Looks like a better deal than this “lightly used” Kamado here in Orange County on Craigslist.  Unless this is something worth restoring I’d be reluctant to pay $300 for it.

Edit - Also forgot to say welcome!  I’m kinda new here, been an egg owner for 7 years and a lurker here just as long.  Joined a few years ago but just started posting recently.

@LanikaiEgger you got a  steal. Look at it this way, you got a good deal on the cart and they threw in the eggs for free.

Well worth 3 hours and $500. Welcome to the madness. How did you manage not egging for almost 5 years?

  • Love it guys. It was so hard to not egg for 5 years. I hope I never have a drought like that again. Did brisket and ribs last week, mixed results. I'll be posting soon.
  • Congrats on finding such a great deal. And welcome to the forum.
