New LBGE bands installed
Plutonium
Posts: 231
Installed my new bands last night, digging the new open/close feel. Aligns so much better already. Digging the wooden handle too.
If I remember correctly, my original install instructions suggested a band bolt torque specification and the new band’s manual doesn’t. It just had a picture of the bent bolts. As an engineer, I prefer numbers but there really isn’t much space to get my torque wrench in there anyway on the new one.

Nice. Damn engineers and specifications. LOL. I was considering doing the same. Does the new set up open as wide as the old style?Large Big Green Egg in a nest. North Shore of Boston.

It feels like it shuffles back and up, more than a direct hinge upward. That said, my old one had underbite alignment issues and didn't seem to open up as well as when it was new, so it feels about the same opening clearance to me.Albuquerque, NM - LBGE and an old rusted gasser that I use for accessory storage.

I also recently installed the new bands on my Large BGE and am very pleased with the result. It doesn't open quite as wide, but it opens better and doesn't have the alignment issues I was constantly having with my old bands.

I've got a slight underbite with my new XL which I assume has the new bands... not sure how I should go about correcting now that I've "bent the bolts". The engineer in me doesn't like bent bolts...South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave

I have the original bands still on my 2011 era LBGE and only remember instructions to bend those bolts with no torque specs. Failed to keep up on tightening them after a move and first pizza I did resulted in a costly mistake of a shattered dome.
Dealt with underbite issues putting the new dome in and had to get some help from BGE dudes.. I’ll see if I can find the email instructions on how to fix underbite. -
I actually found this online to help assist with my underbite, while it’s info from BGE HQ it was not my conversation/communication with them and not my write-up. Being the old style bands not sure if this helps but I’m not familiar with the new setup and how similar/different it is.
https://us.v-cdn.net/5017260/uploads/editor/7d/p00ejsxt9zwr.pdfCrisis averted!!! I called this morning and spoke to Dewayne at BGE HQ Customer Service. He was extremely helpful and guided me through the steps to level out the top. It was extremely simple to do, even for someone who didn't understand the way these things are put together.
So basically here's what was the problem and what I did. The first problem was that the lower band was not wrapped around evenly - it was lower in the rear than in the front. He explained to me that the lower band should come right up to the edge of the lower gasket all the way around the lower half. So I loosened the carriage bolt on the lower rear band and GENTLY tapped along the band using a block of wood and a rubber mallet until the band was placed evenly around the whole bottom. Then I tightened the band. From that point, the underbite had improved significantly, but there was still a bit of unevenness along the planes where the gaskets met and it still did not pass the dollar bill test. In fact, the gap on the rear side between the gaskets was slightly worse, but I wasn't worried because I knew there were a couple more steps to
Next step was to adjust the front to back placement to fine tune the sitting of the top to the bottom. There are two slotted acorn nuts on the top part of the hinge (above the spring) on both sides of the top that needed to be loosened so that I can 'wiggle' the top into a centered position. So I loosened all 4 nuts, wiggled it into position, then tightened. Now the top was centered properly (no under or overbite), but there was still unevenness on the plane of contact - in other words, it still failed the dollar bill test.
The last step was to somewhat repeat the first step (loosening the carriage bolt) except for the upper band. Wherever there was the largest gap between the two gaskets, I GENTLY tapped the band upward which essentially pushed the lid downward by it's own weight. Once I saw that the upper band was positioned in such a way that the entire top part of the egg sat nicely and evenly on the bottom, I tightened the carriage bolt of the top band and vuala! It was fixed. Dollar bill test passed all the way around the egg. No more underbite (or overbite). I'm happy as a clam! -
I installed a new band and hinge set a few weeks ago. All good, but I wish the lid would open farther.Michiana, South of the border.

what's the price of this new style band for a large?MiniMax, Large, and XL

I was told by a dealer there's a new hinge coming out late this year- supposedly you can open it with one finger, similar to KJ's air lift hinge. Can anyone validate that? Hoping its true...Milton, GA

No disrespect here, but do you need it due to a shoulder injury? I haven't noticed my eggs overly hard to open. Simplicity of movement usually comes from complexity of bands, which means higher prices and failure rates. Reminded me of our old mini van with the power lift gate and sliding doors. They would fail from time to time, and I had wished the old technology was there for less money, and higher reliability.GoooDawgs said:I was told by a dealer there's a new hinge coming out late this year- supposedly you can open it with one finger, similar to KJ's air lift hinge. I think I paid $125 for mine? Its going to be dealer specific, so your best bet is to check locally, as any cost we quote you is probably different than what your dealer wants to take from you.beansberry said:what's the price of this new style band for a large? -
LOL - I live here in the area of Peoria, IL - home of Caterpillar. Furthermore I live in nearby Dunlap still within the reaches of CAT and homes of MANY CAT engineers. Long ago I learned to never ask one the time of day as those guys would rather tell you how to build a clock!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

I work for a bge dealer and when I got my second large I swapped the new style hinges out for one of the old style hinges off of a floor model. Not saying that one is better than the other, but the clamshell hinges feel better to me because there is no side to side shimmy in the hinge.

I can’t believe that they spent time redesigning and still use bent bolts.SonVolt said:I've got a slight underbite with my new XL which I assume has the new bands... not sure how I should go about correcting now that I've "bent the bolts".
