Handle is falling apart

After 4 years, my wooden handle is in terrible shape and is falling apart. I saw a forum post here awhile back about custom handles. I don't need anything too fancy (aka not too pricey) for my medium egg... but what do y'all do when your handle falls apart?

Buy a new one, and urethane it heavily. Sand it down between coats and you're good to go.

The DudeThis is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.

Walter SobchakNihilists! *uck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

  • Now you can justify getting a custom one with your name on it.

Any recommended sellers? I just got a looflighter, smoker cap, and a new brush so don't really want to go crazy $$$.

Dunno if anyone makes these, but I'd love to replace mine with a stainless cool-touch handle like you see on quality off-sets.

Do you own a drill and a saw? You can make your own handle for nothing!

I recently purchased a replacement handle from @stlcharcoal.  If you want a stock handle, give him a shout.  I did put two coats of sealant on it prior to installation.

Maybe I'll wait until I am ready to build the table and bar for it and just crank one out then.

Wow I am getting off topic reacts for commenting on a reply to my post above? And I got one today for a comment I made back in 2014? What happened to this place? :(
  • I have a custom handle I needed to refinish, so I took it off and made a redneck temporary out of pallet wood.

My point is your handle can be anything.  Make one for free or buy something expensive.  You're only limited by your imagination and/or your wallet if you go high-end.

this was just a retarded exercise for entertainment,  but the handle is still going strong.

you can take the old handle apart and use it as a template for a new one and it should really be a quick hour job.

I have many handles from here: http://www.amlwoodart.com/BGE1.html

The elements aren’t kind to any wood handles so the more you protect them the longer they’ll last.

At risk of being flamed or accused of trolling, I offer this old post. I had the "brilliant" idea of making my own handle. Ynette thought I was nuts, but after I installed it, she sort of liked it. I have had lots of positive feedback. I showed a picture of it to a professional chef in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and he said "That is badass! I love it!" Every time I have a new guest over for a cookout, I get great feedback.

    Best Handle...ever.

@TifffanyD, I made this one for my mini egg with some driftwood that I found at the lake.  It’s held up better than any other handle that I’ve bought. Simple and rustic.

Here is the one I made for my minimax. Don't have pic right now mounted the egg, but green Corian is perfect. Ended up making them for all my eggs, although the medium one ended up with a slightly different shape I kinda like better. Nice thing it is weatherproof and looks as good as the day I made it.

I’m in. I had two curly maple handles made for my small and large. I now need one for my mini. My former maker quit due to time and small kids. Anyone on here make them?
