Pecan shells for smoke?

As the subject suggests, are pecan shells good for smoke? I know pecan is preferred for turkey, but I haven't found any wood around here. I'd suppose walnut shells might be bitter, and almond might be poison, but I wonder if pecan or other shells work O.K. Any one tried them?[p]gdenby

I used to toss on pistachio shells on my smoker. But it wasn't for flavor or smoke. It was just to get rid of them.

gdenby,
They produce a lot of smoke so be careful on the amount you throw in.

gdenby,
I'll echo ronbeaux. I've used them on chicken and they are great, but wow what a lot of smoke. I used two fistfuls, soaked about 30 minutes.....tom

tomo,
A friend gave me a 5 gallon bucket of them about 8 years ago and I still 4.5 gallons left! After the first time I used them I now only use about 1/8 cup at a time. About the size of a golf ball max. Of course I don't use them more than once per month since I've grown fond of maple and cherry.
