Thanks @thetrim - I had no idea this was a thing.  Always learning something new around here.  I googled it and now I have to try it.  Spud Spikes will be ordered today.

Do you use a nail?  If so, do you think it helps?

My mom always used them when I was growing up when doing a baked potato in the oven, so yes I think it works.  I hope I'm not crushed to learn that it doesn't actually aid or speed up the cooking at all.

Your "shaft", when inserted into the "spud" transfers heat and whatnot.

I always butter and spice( salt, garlic, pepper) . Last ones I did I sliced the potatoes and layered onion slices inside, wrapped in foil and cooked indirect at 400 for about 30 mins. Butter stayed in the foil and moved taters to the edges the last few minutes to crisp the skin a bit. Made for a good side with my steak

I love cooking the petite medley from Kroger .  EVOO and Susie Q's SM thrown into a grilling bowl.  Those things will pop in your mouth when you bite into them.

Have any of you put butter on a potato after slicing open?

Kidding aside, both of your spud pics look spectacular.
