Best size turkey for the large BGE
Lovetocook
Posts: 54
I have invited several people over for Thanksgiving, but I won't know until the last minute how many guests will make it. I will be cooking for at least 3 people, but it could be as many as 10. So I thought that maybe I should ask what would be a good size turkey to cook on a large BGE? I don't mind having leftovers, I could always freeze them.[p]thanks,

Lovetocook,
i always like to cook a big turkey (20 - 24 pounds) no matter how many are coming. ... give some of it to the guests, use the rest in things like pot pies. ... [p]here is the link to how i do em. ...

Lovetocook,
we are big meat eaters, for a crowd of 7-10 i would make 2 18 pounders, one in the egg, the other in the oven. whats left of the oven bird will be made into an egged gumbo and then gumbo pie. i always order the same size so theres no surprises with pan size etc.
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
mad max beyond eggdome,[p]Thanks for the link. I have the instructions printed and at home waiting for the special day
[p]Will a 20 - 24 lb turkey fit okay on my large BGE?[p]thanks,

Lovetocook,
sure a 20 - 24 pounder will fit fine. . .the one in those pictures i think was right around 22 pounds. .. .just make sure you do a cold test fit first to make sure your set up will work (again, the basketball works great). ..

mad max beyond eggdoem,[p]will your method work on breast only instead of the whole bird (obviously, I wouldn't have to worry about seperate cook times for dark and white meats, but are there other issues). Also, anyone see any problem with doing two breasts at once rather than one whole bird?[p]Thanks in advance.[p]AUAtty

AUAtty,
don't know why not. . .probably easier with just breasts as you don't have to worry about the temp differences between breasts and thighs. ...course, you won't get the drippings like you would from a whole turkey. .. go buy a few necks to make the broth, and add some of the broth to the roasting pan to get plenty of liquid (along with the butter and wine) for basting purposes. . ..that oughta work. ..

Lovetocook,[p]
When you smoke this turkey, are you using the ceramic insert for indirect cooking? Or are you using JUST the cooking grid?
I am going to attempt to smoke the turkey this Thanksgiving.
