Grease in the Vent Screen :/

greetings friends,
opened the egg to make the char siu and DAMMIT there’s mold and rust everywhere. Seems the bottom screen was clogged with grease from the many low and slows I’ve been firing. Looftlighter blasred it out, albeit with a little damage to the screen as a result.
So - a quick heat up to kill everything in there and we’ll be back in action. Greensboro had so much rain and humidity that it might have happened, anyway.

Interesting. In the passed 18 years I swear that grease on the bottom screen is a new one to me!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

True Dat on the rain. BB3 squeezed out a dry weekend by a frogs hair!

I've never seen grease in that vent screen, but I, too, burned a hole in it with a torch, once -- I forget what I was trying to do. And I ordered a new one that's not a screen, but a sheet of metal with tiny holes drilled in it. It's much more sturdy, I don't notice any change in how it draws air, and the old one just slid out and the new one just slid in. I like it better than the original.

I bought my egg used and the screen had rusted through. I picked up the same punched metal one as @Theophan - agree it works great and should last forever.

I have grease actively dripping out of the bottom of my egg when I do the three frozen butts cook. Every time.RRP said:Interesting. In the passed 18 years I swear that grease on the bottom screen is a new one to me!
It was why I eventually justified my clean burn. Inside of the egg was TOTALLY propylized together with butt juice.
