OT - Panasonic Plaza

Just has my second Panny plasma go dark on me in the last 10 years.  It’s what they call “the 7 blinks of death”.  Never again, Panasonic.

Dang, with the Masters in 2 days, I need to move fast.  Anybody buy a tv recently.  I’m using Directv.  I suppose at this point I should go 4K Ultra HD, OLED or some such thing.  Probably 55”, but 65” might fit.

You guys know everything...thoughts?

I've had real good luck with Samsung. Had this one for 10 years, the only problem I had was the remote crapped out. Probably because I've dropped it a whole bunch of times.

There have been a few recent threads discussing tv's. Might wan to do a search.

LG’s OLED has the most amazing picture I’ve seen. But fairly new set so so long term history- it’s also $2.5k for 55”.

I have had good luck with my Samsung TVs.

I have had good luck with Vizio. Just bought my third one two days ago. All three still work like new, even the one I use outdoors on the patio. I leave it out all winter and I live in Northern Ohio. Never had any problems with any of them.

I reached out to buddy who’s fully up to date on tvs - he loves the LG OLEDs.  Best Buy has 2 55”s on sale - $1,600 & $1,700

Depending on model, the Panny is the best plasma (aside from Kuro). You will not be happy with standard LEDs.  Go OLED if you can swing it.

Bought a Sony 55 4K UHD last November.  Looked at the LG 55 OLED but couldn’t go to $2500.  Very happy with the Sony but OLED at $1600 and $1700 might have changed my mind.

I will literally cry the day my Panasonic plasma dies.

Same here.  My HDMI board is starting to have issues, I hope it lasts a bit longer.

I actually dislike watching movies, sporting events, etc at most people's houses.  I usually adjust their Tv's when they are getting more beer.  Saturated colors and soap opera effect run me crazy.  I run calibrated Tv's at my house.

Turned mine on last evening - picture came up as usual - then it went dark - nothing on the screen, no sound.  Power light flashing 7 times.  Very disappointed - TC-P55GT30.  My dear wife bought it for me 5 or 6 years ago when she went back to work after an 11 year break to stay home with our daughter.

Going with the LG OLED 55C7P - on sale $1,699.  Will look around for a better price first - Best Buy will match most retailers.

    Thanks for the input!

I hear ya!  I’ve been dreading (and hoping) for about 2 years - so I’m gonna pounce!  I just pulled the trigger on the 55” LG OLED.  I’ll pick it up at Best Buy late this afternoon.  Wife’s head will be spinning...

  • I just bought a 75" samsung qled q7f.  Everything about it is spectacular.

In doing my research, I found the site below and spoke to many dealers/installers before pulling the trigger.  There are some other, marginally higher rated options on the site, but the "experts" I spoke to (who all handled multiple brands) seemed pretty much in agreement on Samsung.  Not easy for a historical Sony guy.  But it's been great so far -- 10 days in.

It’s done.  The LG is in the house and up & running.  The picture really is spectacular, even running just 1080i.  Been on the line forever trying to figure out what is needed to get 4K from Directv...speaking of wormholes...

That rabbit hole gets infinitely deep if you start reading the dedicated home theater forum. When we put the addition on the house I had plans to convert the old garage into a dedicated home theater. It would have been perfect, 14’ ceilings would have made for awesome stadium style seating. Sadly my better half put the brakes on and demanded that it be made into a guest bedroom.

Some days I still mourn what could’ve been. I was heartbroken when my Panny ZT60 died.

I feel your pain, Ihad a home theater in my last house.  No such luck in my new house.  Most my gear is packed away and I am stuck with a sound bar.

If you have the genie system, you need 4k-compatible client boxes (C61K-700 or higher) - you can't run 4k off of the master box.  You may be able to talk DTV into a free upgrade of one client, but I wasn't able to get more than that.  Additional boxes are $100.

Note that DTV only has 3 4k channels with extremely intermittent content (they do  have a channel or two of the Masters, which is gorgeous in 4k).  You can also get a few movies on demand in 4k.

Nice thing, other than the box rental (which is a wash if you are replacing an existing client), I don't think there are any other additional charges for 4k.  (Note also that Netflix has an upcharge to access 4k content, but Amazon video does not - also streaming 4k video will wreck your data cap, if you have an ISP that cares about that).

@buzd504. Thanks for all that info!  I do have the genie system, and the main box (of course) is in the room where my new tv resides.  So, I swap-out one of my client boxes for a 4K capable client, then move my main box into another room?  Hmmmm...I guess the main box/dvr doesn’t have to reside in the family room?

Each person we spoke with at dtv told a different story.  I did upgrade the Netflix service for $3/month.
