OT-1st year making maple syrup

Been collecting sap from 17 of the trees in our yard for 6 days. Collected about 115 gallons of sap. Today I started to boil on a home made evaporator using a turkey fryer. Evaporating about 3 gallons per hour. Might be here awhile.
Will be back to square one when I collect sap tomorrow. But we are having a blast with the kids.

Very cool. I'll be watching for your updates. Where are you located?Phoenix -
What’s the typical ratio of sap to syrup produced? Good luck! It sounds like a super cool project!=======================================

Have a blast with the kids! I used to run a sugar house here in New England where we boiled between 800-1000 gallons of sap per day. It’s in my blood and I miss it, bad.
@thetrim Best case scenario is about 35-40 gallons of sap to 1 gallon of syrup. With average sap, 1.5-2% sugar, is 45-50 gallons to 1 gallon of syrup. -
What cornfed said on boiling ratios. I am in WNY between Rochester and Buffalo. Went to bed about midnight boiled off about 20 gallons yesterday. Looking good so far -
@fruitguy. What’s your technique on draining the sap from the tree? Is it as simple as boring a hole in it with a drain pipe sticking out?Large BGE - McDonald, PA

We took a trip to NH in the fall of 2016 and the syrup makers there said they typically get 53:1 and typically tap upwards of 7K trees. Bigger operations do more like 18K-20K trees. They do maple syrup in the spring, boiled cider in the fall. This place uses the same evaporator equipment that they use to make boiled cider (great additive for anything with apple flavor). Their family has been making boiled cider and maple syrup for > 200 yrs. You can buy direct or from King Arthur Flour.

My grandpa lived in MI in a little town called Montague. I can remember watching him boil sap in early spring. The last batch was always boiled longer and poured into the snow for maple sugar candy. I miss the really thick syrup he made.
