Turkey size on XL

Just wondering what size bird will fit on my XL. I have a raised grid I can use for raised cooking (think that's 19"?)

i have a 12-14lb bird reserved. Debating between mad max method or spatchcock... maybe raised indirect

dont have time to do a test bird before next Thursday :(

    From the BGE website:
The XLarge EGG can cook: 2 20-pound turkeys, 24 burgers, 11 whole chickens, 12 steaks, or 12 racks of ribs vertically

12-14 pound will not be a challenge in the XL...but do a cold/dry run with the bird still in plastic to test your pan and set up. MM or Spat, that choice is yours.

12-14LB birds are a great size. I've fit 2 spatched on my xl before.

Go ahead and spatchcock. Outside of the awkwardness of prepping it (if you haven't done it before, if you have you know how easy it is) it's a easy very forging much faster cook. Plan for about 2-2.5 hours tops at 350. I like indirect for my holiday birds. Raise that grid as high as you cna get it to get a nice brown skin.

Also, let it sit in the fridge unwrapped, and prepped for at least 24 hours to let the skin dry out a touch for really great skin. My last skin tip is to run your hand between the bird and the skin (also help crisp it )

Thanks for the feedback! I just wasn't sure if spatchcock would fly (pun intended) on my raised grid

2 twenty lb birds would fit? Whoa!

  • Mom sent me a text "thru the turkey in the trash"(freezer burnt). So I picked up a fresh unfrozen one an hour or so ago. I'm going to try a 15 pounder spatchcocked on the medium since they don't have any 14 pounders. I did a 14 pounder on the medium last year with no problem. Hmm? Better pick up another sack of Rockwood.
  • A 14 pound bird will fit nicely in an XL. I vote spatchcock - a faster and more even cook.

Agree with all above - spatchcock this and you are good to go
