OK to keep platesetter outside?

Quick question: would it be OK to let the platesetter live outside (covered) with the temperature changes, humidity, etc?   I have kept it in the garage, but my wife is finding it more difficult to lift and carry it, and I'm in a wheelchair.  I am able to get it out of my XL and carry it to a nearby mini-fridge we keep outside.  I live in Dallas.

I live in Minnesota and leave mine in the garage during the winter. It's probably not more than 15 degrees in there at times. Never has been an issue. You should be plenty good!

It'll be fine. I try to keep mine dry, but I'm not even sure that matters. It has never been heated or air conditioned. But why refrigerate it?

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

It's a reward system. Put away the plate setter and you get a cold beer.

Mine has been outside for 10 plus years in Memphis - it's fine.  I think our temp changes and humidity are similar to Dallas.

  • Man I try to put mine on their shelf in the garage. Without fail every time I go outside at least one is sitting in a pool of water with leaves on top.

(So if you leave them out they will be fine. But burn them off well before cooking)

Also - I store mine in the egg when I'm not cooking.

I can't chime in on the  weather changes as I'm in SoCal. I don't know if your egg is in a nest, all of mine are. I have the grate racks that work well for me.

It will be just fine outside, I leave mine outside all the time gets rained on and frozen in the winter. If it is wet from the rain just takes longer to get to temp until all the moisture evaporates. The ceramics of BGE can take any temp extremes you can give it. I have taken plate setters from a 450 degree egg and cooled them with a hose to transport them.

If it's worth doing, it's worth overthinking.  Thinking is free.  Foolishness costs time and money.  Or maybe thats just a load of briquettes.  I dunno.

I try and leave mine in the Egg.  When I forget (often) it's either on the wire rack below the egg, or on a paver.  I had lost it under a couple feet of snow 2 winters ago, dug around for it, and put it on for a cook with no negative impacts.
Our weather here goes from -30 to about 90 and there can be huge humidity swings as well.  No issues, although maybe I'm just lucky.

Mine stays outside or in the Egg. In this case it was sitting on the right side of the Egg...or was it on the left side?  =)

Joking aside, I really do leave the platesetter outside uncovered when not in use. The only precaution I take is when it is very cold outside I put the platesetter in the Egg earlier than usual. Somewhere around 200 degrees. My concern is that the platesetter may crack with such a dramatic temperature change.

My understanding is that the plate setter is made from the same stuff as the egg, although unglazed.  It should be fine.

Both of mine have been outside under the tables for years. Yes I'm in the snow / cold belt. No issues yet.

I leave mine in the egg, if not cooking with it just put in after the cook and shut it down.

There's a much greater chance of it breaking by your wife dropping it over leaving it the elements. No offense to your wife.

I leave mine where ever i can lay it.. it's never seen inside other than the warehouse it was in before i got it.

Humid georgia summers... winters... used 2-3 times a week for years... she doesnt care.

I think you are fine to treat it like a rock as long as you dont throw it.

  • Platesetter is covered under the same lifetime warranty as the rest of the ceramics, right? I've already had one replaced because it cracked, replacement has never come out of the box because the crack never got worse but it might give out one day...

My plate setter sits on a table unless I've used it in a cook. It's under a roof, so no rain or snow.

I don't think I would want my plate setter sitting out in the rain or snow....the ceramics will absorb some of that moisture and I'm not willing to chance cracking when it's in a hot Egg.

    Just my caution......

I keep mine in the egg, and only pull it out to load the lump. No problems for the last 15 months.

Best way to damage it is to drop it. Best way to drop it is to move it around a lot.

  • I live near Minneapolis and mine stays outside year-round, next to my LBGE or inside of it - It's my original plate setter, it's 10 years old now, and I use my egg 12 months of the year, mostly low and slow indirect with an occasional pizza party.
  • I keep mine on the patio inside the egg normally in TX.  No issues here
