Cast Iron Cleaning
Photo Egg

Picked up 2 pieces last week.
8" skillet with no maker label. Just 8 D.
Has the heat ring on bottom. Will post photo after it's out of the bag. This is the 4th time in the bag sprayed with oven cleaner. No rust but it was crusted up good. It was almost ready after the last run except for a few troubled areas.

2nd piece is just a lid. Just a little light surface rust.

Nice job! Looking at pics and descriptions here: http://www.castironcollector.com/unmarked.php
I think it looks a lot like a Birmingham Stove & Range late 50s Century series. What’s the measurement on the 8D marking?XL, Large, Small, Mini Eggs, M&M BBQ Texas Smoke King, Shirley Fabrication 24x36 Patio, Humphrey's Weekender, Karubecue C-60, MAK 1-Star General, Hasty Bake Gourmet, Santa Maria Grill, Webers: 14" WSM, 22.5" OTG, 22.5" Kettle Premium, WGA Charcoal

Pretty sure that unmarked one is a Birmingham Stove and Range. Nice find.

@Photo Egg walk me through this concept if you have time.
I bought a new dutch oven last year (all my other stuff is hand me down and seasoned well) I seasoned it but the inside has a funky smell and the lid is getting rust spots.
I was thinking of starting back from scratch with it. I also just bought oven cleaner to do my stove top and interior oven."Brought to you by bourbon, bacon, and a series of questionable life decisions."

My first try with the oven cleaner and it woked great.Killit_and_Grillit said:@Photo Egg walk me through this concept if you have time.

Spray on and put in bag. This pan had a thick layers of build up on upper inside walls and outer walls. The oven cleaner took 4 applications with cold water rinse inbetween.
I also rinsed out bad each time. This will not help wth rust only cooked on carbon build up.
its in the oven now with first round of seasoning but really looks good.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
It does look like the BS&R but letters are only 1/2".R2Egg2Q said:Nice job! Looking at pics and descriptions here: http://www.castironcollector.com/unmarked.php

That's a BSR "Red Mountain" Series. They were manufactured in the 1930s to 1950s. That's a great find.
..and then there is that beautiful Griswold self basting lid. It is very rare. Other than the Griswold # 5 skillet, the #8 self basting lid is one of the most duplicated (translation - fake) in collectible cast iron cookware. Congratulations. I'm jealous!

Strong work Darian.
BSRs are great pans. Found a #8 and #5 recently.
Now you need a #8 large logo skillet.

Many years ago when I was collecting Griswold I had a plastic tub 1/2 full of water and 1 can of lye drain cleaner and just let the cast iron pieces soak until all the crud would rinse of with the garden hose. Just kept using it over and over. Found several pans that were Griswold and I had no idea until I got them clean.
I'm only hungry when I'm awake!

This is my other older pan. The Griswold lid seems to fit pretty well. Finish on the inside is super smooth. But another no name.lolFocker said:

Your second pan looks like an unmarked Lodge. The three notches in the heat ring are why I think so. Beautiful.Large Egg, PGS A40 gasser.
