using extra fire ring

Any one ever used a fire ring stacked on top of fire ring to give a raised grid direct method.

Thanks for reply. I have extra one as result of it being cracked. Don't know how long it will last but sounded better than fire bricks On my medium it does not extend as high as the photo, but is above the gasket. Interested the fact that he inverted the uper one. mine fits either way.[p]Hoping some one else will weigh in that has experience with it.

grs,[p]No experience, but I was thinking of ordering a second ring and cooking grate for my small. My thought is for indirect cooking, to leave the original cooking grate where it is, place a pizza stone on it and add the second fire ring and cooking grate. For fatty foods I can place a cake pan on the lower grate to catch the drippings.[p]Thoughts?[p]Mike

Don't know about samll. I guess it would depend on how high is stackes above the ring. I have an extra grate I was thinking about using to hold a drip pan. It could also hold a pizza stone. I have a plate setter for mine so I would just use that for indirect. But thinking about brisket direct with elevated grid.

grs,[p]I checked with my local dealer. He says there isn't a plate setter for the small. Do you have an aftermarket source for them?[p]Mike

Michael B, I am not sure you can get a bge's 12 inch pizza stone inside the small's fire ring. Not to mention have a gap around it for air movement. Tom

Google place setter. I'm not good at shareing links but the are commonly used in making kilns. Don't know the deminitions you need but there are too many to think about.

it would work, but you lose some grilling space. 2 firebrick splits work fine, the threaded bolts on a grill that everyone makes is better. this is my setup, just 2 bricks raises the first grill for a standard raised grill, and another foldable grill extender on top if i really want to raise it higher.

The mothership has a 2" fire ring available, I got one with the triple grid setup. I've used it with the 4" ring to raise the grid, works fine. -RP

I use an inverted extra fire ring all the time on my mini, and it works great. Only issue would be food placement so thermometer doesn't hit it, but I fit a small roast without a problem. I have two grills, and put a fired tile on lowest to act as a plate setter.
