Remembering My First Day as an Egghead

Options
April 1,1999

It was April Fools Day, but it was also my first day as an Egghead. The only problem was that I didn't know what an Egghead was, nor did I know what to do with this new contraption I bought.

But I was fascinated by the ad that said, "World's best smoker and grill."

Now I owned one. See...

It took a while but I learned that there were accessories available. Like a Daisy Wheel and a nest. Until I learned about them I just made do by tilting the Rain Cap back and letting the egg sit there on the deck.

Boy! Have I come a long way. And most of it was due to the patience and help of some nice folks on this forum, including one I just talked to a few minutes ago. His handle then and now is YB.

While we were talking, it felt like old times. And it felt good.

My first day was 10 years later than yours. And I have no recollection of it at all. I was a big spender though - I bought a nest! And the dfmt was included by then. Hardly use it any more.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Yes to the scissors-hinges, but also a ceramic grate.  I also had to buy the thermometer.  They did give me a bag of BGE Lump.  The Egg developed a stress crack starting in the ash pit and progressed up the side.  I epoxied it back together and gave it to a neighbor to get him started into Egging.  I suspect he will buy a new one within a year.  Big Green Egg has come a long way with the hinges and everything else.  It may have made the Eggs more expensive, but they are definitely better for it.

Thanks.  I'm working on the New Coop design now.  It may take awhile.

Ha... I think everyone did that.  I lived in Spring Texas and I toasted my chicken breast.  Hence the BGE Handle, Spring Chicken.  It stuck, much like my first piece of chicken LOL...
