Wire brushes - When will people stop using them
Comments

Wait, you're supposed to clean the grate?

Every big name grill mfg has stopped selling the embedded bristle type brushes a few years ago, I believe. Hard to sue the Chinese companies I bet.CanDid said:
In the current lawsuit atmosphere we live in, I'm surprised somebody hasn't sued one of the wire brush companies. Spill a cup of hot coffee.... I'm just sayin'.DoubleEgger said:
They'd prefer to tax the crap out of them.Legume said:Well, really, the government should just outlaw wire brushes. It would be easier. -

Not the embedded type. Weber stopped selling the wooden handled embedded wire brushes years ago I assume for this very reason.Hungry Joe said:Title should be "When will people stop using cheap wire brushes"

While a whole bristle isn't likely to pull out of that type of brush I assume that it is possible for a piece of the bristle to break off due to metal fatigue.pgprescott said:

I would not grill at all because you could get struck by lightening on a sunny day. It's possible!HeavyG said:

Clean? Isn't the residue where the flavor concentrates for the next cook? Gotta keep paying' it forward....
Seriously I just knock the big stuff off with a grilling tool prior to cleaning the ashes. No deaths. Yet.Richmond and Mathews County, VA. Large BGE, Weber gas, little Weber charcoal. Vintage ManGrates. Little reddish portable kamado that shall remain nameless here. Very Extremely Stable Genius. -

And what did I say the last time you directed that comment towards me?
Something along the lines of "you like to turn everything into an argument" methinks.
Not looking to argue. Just making an obvious observation. Metal can/will fail due to fatigue and even with that type of brush (and I have a couple of them) I would still do a visual exam after cleaning a grate to ensure that no ingestible fragments were left behind.

It's more likely than you think. I had one and it started shedding after a short while. Breaks in two places and you have a loose bristle.HeavyG said:

All kidding aside about having your dog clean your grill - we have a Westie puppy. Twice now we have caught him chewing "something" on the floor and discovered he had a "bread twisty" in his mouth. I mentioned this to our vet and she warned us what a danger that is to puppies - NOT so much to large breeds or adult dogs BUT little pups like ours. Those thin wires would never show up on the x-ray equipment used in even the best vet offices and can mean deadly punchers in a puppies's system.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

They also sell a wooden model with a replaceable head (taken right off the Weber website):

Yes. We toss twist-ties and rubber bands and use small bag clamps, even for frozen foods.RRP said:All kidding aside about having your dog clean your grill - we have a Westie puppy. Our vet recently told me about a crazy week when she had four blockages and perforations in dogs - including in big dogs with small objects. If a tiny needle is turned just the right way it can get even a big dog. Extremely thin wire generally can be seen on x-rays but maybe a different type.Ex LBGE owner and current BGE liker -

Yeah, I was confused. BGE quite selljngvtheirs and we just quit carrying that type in the Weber. I mistakingly thought they also discontinued them. They have not. Hmmm. I won't use that type of wire brush. I have in fact experienced their bristles coming off.1voyager said:
