You can cook in the rain without much concern

I do not have a smoke ware cap and have no problem in the rain, snow, ice, whatever. I use the provided daisy wheel in this case.Dave

^ agreed. I've cooked many times in the rain, the daisy wheel is really all you need.middle of nowhere- G.I. NE

I was having a real problem in downpours from where my Egg was and it dampening or putting out a low fire.
I got my Smokeware cap on and it's been great.
You'll see some on here that dont don't believe in them and will say save your $$$. (Buy a $1k grill....but save $34 on not buying a Smokeware cap)
Probably the same aholes who hate ketchup.
Also, they make your Egg look sexy. The cap, not the aholes."Brought to you by bourbon, bacon, and a series of questionable life decisions."

If you are cooking below 275 with the daisy wheel there will not be a big enough opening in the top vent to let enough rain in on your meat. I've done butts and chuckies in downpours with no ill effects. Worse case scenario you add a little more rub after the rain passes. No worries.

Many moons ago a strong afternoon storm rolled thru. Wasn't cooking anything outside so wasn't concerned the weather but one of my kamados had the upper vent holes fully opened.
We got about 2" of rain in the couple of hours the storm lasted. By chance, I had left a clean, empty drip pan sitting on the top grate which collected the rain that came thru the holes.
Total quantity of rain was....about a tablespoon. Hardly anything to worry about.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
During a low and slow cook, I just think of a downpour as natures way of spritzing the meat! I only ever use a daisy wheel and it's always been ok - and I'm in the UK where cooking in rain is common

For those who think a stainless steel vent cap is sexy, you and I have very different perceptions of sexy.

Earlier this week it unexpectedly began pouring during a cook and continued to rain hard throughout. The daisy wheel was open about half way or less if I recall. I had been holding aluminum foil over it but went inside for a few minutes, figuring I was worrying too much. (PhD in that.)
After going back out with the daisy wheel still uncovered, the temp suddenly dropped, the smoke looked different, and it smelled a little like wet campfire, all within a minute or so.
An umbrella was held over the egg for the rest of the cook. I don't want to do that again. I'm too new at this to know for certain if it was due to rain, so take this with a grain of salt, but it sure seemed like cause and effect.
A SmokeWare vent was inside waiting to be installed. I don't care if it's cool looking or ugly. (Hoping to use the Egg gasket since it's so new and not right up at the top.)Ex LBGE owner and current BGE liker -
SW Cap is absolutely not a necessity. Some people like the way it looks and some don't. Spend your money where you see fit. I did my first cook in the rain last weekend and couldn't seem to get my Egg over 300 degrees. Any ideas?

I never worry about the rain, if its going to be a down pour then I have this, not the best looking but it works and it was cheap. Goes over the DW no problem.

It has made my all weather eggin' experience more pleasant at home, and away.
I egg exposed, and got bald spots with dfmt on low and slows. Same with the small.
Like Rutland, Caps should be on all eggs.
The design is so outdated and obsolete. There is a reason the BGE is referred to as the Blackberry of ceramic. Lol
I didn't like the look of it on the small, but it is so worth it.
Jar lids are my Smokeware caps for the WSMs, much cheaper.
