Smokeware Gaskets

Last year SW sent me a set of nomex gaskets to try out. I had been putting off installing them because I was stressing about removing my old gasket and the mess it would make.
Well, today I decided to make the swap. Wish I had done it sooner now. My old gasket was crispy and totally done for. I used a plastic scraper and a razor blade. 5 minutes and both top and bottom were off. I used a scotch pad and IPA to clean the surface and then installed the gasket. Could not have been easier. Total install time was 10 minutes for both top and bottom.
Now to see how long they last.

Yeah, not as big a PITA as most think. I just did mine after 12+ years. Similar to you steel putty knife and old chisel. Rubbed clean with mineral spirits and let dry. Better than new as the nomex is way better than the original ones.Ozzie_Isaac said:Last year SW sent me a set of nomex gaskets to try out. Whats with the new guts? Looks like a near virgin. -
Clean burn (on accident). Searing tri-tip and got caught jawing while egg was coming up to temp.pgprescott said:

Why did you use beer to clean the surface?Ozzie_Isaac said:Last year SW sent me a set of nomex gaskets to try out. I had been putting off installing them because I was stressing about removing my old gasket and the mess it would make.

Haha, Ozzie I did that last Saturday night for the first time (miraculously) Came out Sunday and opened the lid and said, "well hell look at that. Someone stole my Egg guts and replaced them with brand new ones"

What adhesive is used on the SW nomex gaskets?
-
No idea. Its part of the backing. Made installation super simple. No mess.Neil Gunn said:What adhesive is used on the SW nomex gaskets?I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

How do you know when you need to replace the gasket? I suppose after 15 years it wouldn't be a bad idea, but never really gave it much thought. Thanks

Does smoke leak out around the gasket? If not, then you may be good for another 15 years (or months - hard to say).Lwoodie said:How do you know when you need to replace the gasket? My BGE gasket was hard as a rock and actually started to peel off. A few run-away nukes finished it off.Lwoodie said:How do you know when you need to replace the gasket? If your gasket looks like this, then it's time to replace.
